1997 Impreza

  1. Check operation of speedometer. If speedometer operates correctly, go to next step. If speedometer does not work correctly, see appropriate SPEEDOMETER TEST  under COMPONENT TESTS.
  2. Turn ignition switch to OFF position and remove speedometer. Disconnect connectors from TCM and speedometer. Measure resistance between TCM and speedometer connector i12. Resistance between connector B56 terminal No. 11 and connector i12 terminal No. 8 should be 0-1 ohm. If resistance is okay, go to next step. If resistance is not within specification, repair open in harness between TCM and speedometer.
  3. Measure resistance between speedometer connector i12 and ground. Resistance between connector i12 terminal No. 8 and ground should be more than 100 k/ohms. If resistance is okay, go to next step. If resistance is not within specification, repair short to ground in harness between TCM and speedometer.
    4. NOTE: All wheels must be off ground to perform following test. Speed difference between front and rear wheels during this step may cause ABS light to illuminate, but this does not indicate a malfunction. When A/T diagnosis is complete, perform ABS memory clearance procedure.
  4. Connect connectors to speedometer and TCM and install speedometer. Raise vehicle and secure with safety stand. Ensure all wheels are off floor. Start engine and set vehicle speed at 6 MPH (10 KM/H). Back probe and measure voltage between TCM connectors B55 and B56. AC voltage between connector B55 terminal No. 10 and connector B56 terminal No. 11 should pulsate from 0-1 volts to more than 4 volts. If voltage is okay and AT OIL TEMP light illuminates, concern is intermittent and circuit has returned to normal condition. A temporary poor contact of connector or harness may be cause. Repair TCM harness or connector. If voltage is not within specification, go to next step.
  5. Check for poor contact in vehicle speed sensor No. 2 circuit. If contact is poor, repair as necessary. If contact is okay, replace TCM and retest.
