1997-98 Impreza, 1998 Forester & Legacy

  1. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect connector from Throttle Position Sensor (TPS). Measure resistance between TPS connector terminals. Resistance between TPS connector terminals No. 1 and No. 2 should be .3-.7 k/ohms. If resistance is okay, go to next step. If resistance is not within specification, replace TPS.
  2. Measure resistance between TPS connector terminals. Resistance between TPS connector terminals No. 1 and No. 3 should be 3.5-6.5 k/ohms. If resistance is okay, go to next step. If resistance is not within specification, replace TPS.
  3. Measure resistance between TPS connector and TCM connector B54. Resistance between TPS connector terminal No. 2 and connector B54 terminal No. 8 should be 0-1 ohm. If resistance is okay, go to next step. If resistance is not within specification, repair open in harness between TPS connector and TCM.
  4. Measure resistance between TPS connector and TCM connector B56. Resistance between TPS connector terminal No. 3 and connector B56 terminal No. 19 should be 0-1 ohm. If resistance is okay, go to next step. If resistance is not within specification, repair open in harness between TPS connector and TCM.
  5. Measure resistance between TCM connector B54 and ground. Resistance between connector B54 terminal No. 8 and ground should be more than 100 k/ohms. If resistance is okay, go to next step. If resistance is not within specification, repair short to ground in harness between TPS connector and TCM.
  6. Measure resistance between TCM connector B56. Resistance between connector B56 terminal No. 19 and ground should be more than 100 k/ohms. If resistance is okay, go to next step. If resistance is not within specification, repair open in harness between TPS connector and TCM.
  7. Measure resistance between ECM B84 connector and TCM connector B54. Resistance between B84 connector terminal No. 6 and connector B54 terminal No. 8 should be 0-1 ohm. If resistance is okay, go to next step. If resistance is not within specification, repair open in harness between ECM and TCM.
  8. Measure resistance between ECM B84 connector and TCM connector B56. Resistance between B84 connector terminal No. 21 and connector B56 terminal No. 19 should be 0-1 ohm. If resistance is okay, go to next step. If resistance is not within specification, repair open in harness between ECM and TCM.
  9. Connect connectors to TCM, ECM and TPS. With KOEO, backprobe and measure voltage between TCM connector B54 terminals. Voltage between connector B54 terminals No. 7 and No. 8 should be .3-.7 volt with throttle fully closed. If voltage is okay, go to next step. If voltage is not within specification, go to step  12.
  10. Backprobe and measure voltage between TCM connector B54 terminals. Voltage between connector B54 terminals No. 7 and No. 8 should be 4.3-4.9 volts with throttle fully open. If voltage is okay, go to next step. If voltage is not within specification, go to step  12.
  11. Backprobe and measure voltage between TCM connector B56 and ECM B84 connector. Voltage between connector B56 terminal No. 19 and B84 connector terminal No. 21 should be 5.02-5.22 volts. If voltage is okay and AT OIL TEMP light illuminates, concern is intermittent and circuit has returned to normal condition. A temporary poor contact of connector or harness may be cause. Repair harness to, or connector in TPS circuit. If voltage is not within specification, go to next step.
  12. Check for poor contact in TPS circuit. If poor contact is found, repair as necessary. If contact is okay, replace TCM and retest.
