1997-98 Impreza, 1997-98 Legacy & 1998 Forester

  1. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect connector from transmission. Measure resistance between transmission connector receptacle and ground. Resistance between transmission connector receptacle terminal No. 4 and ground should be 0-1 ohm. If resistance is okay, go to next step. If resistance is not within specification, repair open in internal transmission harness between receptacle and ground.
  2. Measure resistance between transmission connector receptacle terminals. Resistance between transmission connector receptacle terminals No. 2 and No. 4 should be 20-32 ohms. If resistance is okay, go to next step. If resistance is not within specification, go to step  9.
  3. Disconnect connector from TCM. Measure resistance between TCM connector B55 and transmission connector. Resistance between connector B55 terminal No. 13 and transmission connector terminal No. 2 should be 0-1 ohm. If resistance is okay, go to next step. If resistance is not within specification, repair open in harness between TCM and transmission connector.
  4. Measure resistance between TCM connector B55 and transmission connector. Resistance between connector B55 terminal No. 10 and transmission connector terminal No. 4 should be 0-1 ohm. If resistance is okay, go to next step. If resistance is not within specification, repair open in harness between TCM and transmission connector.
  5. Measure resistance between TCM connector B55 and ground. Resistance between connector B55 terminal No. 13 and ground should be 100 k/ohms. If resistance is okay, go to next step. If resistance is not within specification, repair short to ground in harness between TCM and transmission connector.
  6. Measure resistance between TCM connector B55 and ground. Resistance between connector B55 terminal No. 10 and ground should be 100 k/ohms. If resistance is okay, go to next step. If resistance is not within specification, repair short to ground in harness between TCM and transmission connector.
  7. NOTE: All wheels must be off ground to perform following test. Speed difference between front and rear wheels during this step may cause ABS light to illuminate, but this does not indicate a malfunction. When A/T diagnosis is complete, perform ABS memory clearance procedure.
  8. Measure signal voltage output from TCM. Warm-up engine and transmission to operating temperature. Raise vehicle on hoist and support with safety stand. Move shift selector to "D" position and slowly increase vehicle speed to 31 MPH (50 KM/H). Measure voltage between TCM connector B55 terminals. Voltage between connector B55 terminals No. 13 and No. 10 should be 1-9 volts. If voltage is okay and AT OIL TEMP light illuminates, concern is intermittent and circuit has returned to normal condition. A temporary poor contact of connector or harness may be cause. Repair TCM harness or connector. If voltage is not within specification, go to next step.
  9. Check for poor contact in shift solenoid No. 2 circuit. If contact is poor, repair as necessary. If contact is okay, replace TCM and retest.
  10. Remove transmission connector from bracket. Drain transmission fluid when cool. Remove oil pan and disconnect connector from shift solenoid No. 2. Measure resistance between shift solenoid No. 2 connector and ground. Resistance between shift solenoid No. 2 connector terminal No. 1 and ground should be 20-32 ohms. If resistance is okay, go to next step. If resistance is not within specification, replace shift solenoid assembly.
  11. Measure resistance between shift solenoid No. 2 connector and transmission connector receptacle. Resistance between shift solenoid No. 2 connector terminal No. 1 and transmission connector receptacle terminal No. 2 should be 0-1 ohm. If resistance is okay, go to next step. If resistance is not within specification, repair open in internal transmission harness between transmission connector receptacle and shift solenoid No. 2 connector.
  12. Measure resistance between transmission connector receptacle and ground. Resistance between transmission connector receptacle terminal No. 2 and ground should be 100 k/ohms. If resistance is okay and AT OIL TEMP light illuminates, concern is intermittent and circuit has returned to normal condition. A temporary poor contact of connector or harness may be cause. Repair TCM harness or connector. If resistance is not within specification, repair short to ground in internal transmission harness between transmission connector receptacle and shift solenoid No. 2 connector.
