1997-98 Impreza, 1997-98 Legacy & 1998 Forester
NOTE:
Repair all other DTC before entering these diagnostic steps.
- Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect connector from transmission. Measure resistance between transmission connector receptacle and ground. Resistance between transmission connector terminal No. 4 and ground should be 0-1 ohm. If resistance is okay, go to next step. If resistance is not within specification, repair open in transmission internal harness.
- Measure resistance between transmission connector receptacle terminals. Resistance between transmission connector receptacle terminals No. 4 and No. 6 should be 9-17 ohms. if resistance is okay, go to next step. If resistance is not within specification, go to step 10.
- Disconnect connector from TCM. Measure resistance between TCM and transmission connector. Resistance between TCM connector B55 terminal No. 10 and transmission connector terminal No. 4 should be 0-1 ohm. If resistance is okay, go to next step. If resistance is not within specification, repair open in harness between TCM and transmission connector.
- Measure resistance between TCM and transmission connector. Resistance between TCM connector B55 terminal No. 5 and transmission connector terminal No. 6 should be 0-1 ohm. If resistance is okay, go to next step. If resistance is not within specification, repair open in harness between TCM and transmission connector.
- Measure resistance between TCM and ground. Resistance between TCM connector B55 terminal No. 5 and ground should be more than 100 k/ohms. If resistance is okay, go to next step. If resistance is not within specification, repair short to ground in harness between TCM and transmission harness connector.
- Measure resistance between TCM and ground. Resistance between TCM connector B55 terminal No. 10 and ground should be more than 100 k/ohms. If resistance is okay, go to next step. If resistance is not within specification, repair short to ground in harness between TCM and transmission harness connector.
- Measure signal voltage output from TCM. Warm-up engine and transmission to operating temperature. Raise vehicle on hoist and support with safety stand. Move shift selector to "D" position and slowly increase vehicle speed to 47 MPH (75 KM/H). Wheels will lock-up. Measure voltage between TCM connector B55 terminals. Voltage between connector B55 terminals No. 5 and No. 10 should be more than 8.5 volts. If voltage is okay, go to next step. If voltage is not within specification, go to step 9.
- Return engine to idle speed and move shift selector to "N" position. Measure voltage between TCM connector B55 terminals. Voltage between connector B55 terminals No. 5 and No. 10 should be less than .5 volt. If voltage is okay and AT OIL TEMP light illuminates, concern is intermittent and circuit has returned to normal condition. A temporary poor contact of connector or harness may be cause. Repair TCM harness or connector. If voltage is not within specification, go to next step.
- Check for poor contact in duty solenoid "B" circuit. If contact is okay, replace TCM and retest. If contact is poor, repair as necessary.
- Remove transmission connector from bracket. Drain transmission fluid when cool, remove oil pan and disconnect connector from duty solenoid "B". Measure resistance between duty solenoid "B" connector and ground. Resistance between duty solenoid "B" connector terminal No. 1 and ground should be 9-17 ohms. If resistance is okay, go to next step. If resistance is not within specification, replace duty solenoid "B".
- Measure resistance between duty solenoid "B" and transmission connector receptacle. Resistance between duty solenoid "B" terminal No. 1 and transmission connector receptacle terminal No. 6 should be 0-1 ohm. If resistance is okay, go to next step. If resistance is not within specification, repair open in transmission internal harness between transmission connector receptacle and duty solenoid "B".
- Measure resistance between transmission connector receptacle and ground. Resistance between transmission connector receptacle terminal No. 6 and ground should be more than 100 k/ohms. If resistance is okay, go to next step. If resistance is not within specification, repair short to ground in internal harness between transmission connector receptacle and duty solenoid "B".
NOTE:
All wheels must be off ground to perform following test. Speed difference between front and rear wheels during this step may cause ABS light to illuminate, but this does not indicate a malfunction. When A/T diagnosis is complete, perform ABS memory clearance procedure.
