Timing Belt: Installation

CAUTION: DO NOT allow press pressure to exceed 2205 lbs. (992 kg). DO NOT release pressure until stopper pin is completely installed.

Using a vertical press, slowly push rod into tensioner adjuster body until holes in belt tensioner adjuster rod and adjuster body are aligned. On 1998-99 models, exert 66 lbs. (30 kg) pressure to push rod into body. For all models, process should take 3 minutes or more to accomplish. When holes are aligned, install .059" (1.50 mm) diameter stopper pin on 1996-97 models or 0.08" (2 mm) diameter stopper pin on 1998-99 models into holes in adjuster body and rod.
Install belt tensioner adjuster with stopper pin in place, and temporarily tighten mounting bolt. Install idler No. 2, then idler No. 3. See Figure. Ensure crankshaft sprocket and camshaft sprocket alignment marks are still aligned. See Figure.
Install timing belt, being careful not to move sprockets. DO NOT rotate camshafts independently of each other or bent valves may result. Ensure rotation direction of belt is correct, that all alignment marks are aligned, and number of teeth between alignment points is correct when belt is installed. See Figure. Disengagement of more than 3 timing belt teeth may result in interference between valves and pistons.
Install belt idler No. 1. Once all marks are aligned and idlers are installed, remove stopper pin from tensioner adjuster. To complete installation, reverse removal procedure. Tighten bolts/nuts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . On models with manual transaxle, adjust clearance between timing belt guide and timing belt to .020-.059" (0.5-1.5 mm).
