Timing Belt: Inspection
- Inspect timing belt for wear or cracks. Inspect belt for signs of oil contamination. Timing belt bend radius must be greater than 2.36" (60.0 mm). See Fig 1. Replace belt if damaged or oil contaminated.

- Inspect tensioner adjuster for leaking oil seals and worn rod ends. Slight traces of oil at rod oil seal do not indicate problem or component failure. On 1996-97 models, while holding tensioner with both hands, push rod section against floor or wall using a force of 33 lbs. (15 kg) to ensure rod section does not move. When force is increased to 33-110 lbs. (15-50 kg), rod should fully sink into body after 8.5 seconds of pressure. On 1998-99 models, while holding tensioner with both hands, push rod section against floor or wall using a force of 66 lbs. (30 kg) to ensure rod section does not move.
- If rod section moves, replace tensioner adjuster with a NEW one. Measure tensioner adjuster rod's extension beyond adjuster body. See Fig 2. Replace tensioner adjuster if distance is not correct. Inspect idler pulleys and tensioner pulley for smooth rotation. Replace components if noise or excessive play is noted.
