Wheel Bearing (AWD): Inspection

  1. With rear of vehicle raised, check lateral play of wheel assembly. If bearing free play exists, remove rear wheel. Attach a dial indicator to wheel hub. Measure axial hub play by pulling hub straight out.
  2. Axial play should not exceed .002" (.05 mm). Turn hub back and forth to check for noise or binding. If axial play is excessive or if bearings are noisy or binding, replace bearing. See WHEEL BEARING under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION .
