Air Bag Module

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 1996 Subaru SVX. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.

The driver-side air bag module is located in center of steering wheel. The passenger-side air bag is located in right side of instrument panel. When impact sensor and safety sensor close simultaneously, the ignitor starts a reaction which produces nitrogen gas, to inflate driver-side and passenger-side air bags. When air bags deploy, tear seams molded into steering wheel trim cover and passenger-side air bag trim cover separate, allowing inflation of air bag.
