Removal & Installation: Engine: Removal

  1. Remove spare tire and support. Fuel pressure must be released. Disconnect fuel pump wiring connector. Start engine and operate until it stalls. Crank engine for an additional 5 seconds. With ignition off, reconnect fuel pump wiring connector.
  2. Drain cooling system. Disconnect upper and lower radiator hoses, heater hoses and remove radiator. Disconnect electrical connectors, vacuum hoses and fuel lines.
  3. Disconnect accelerator cable, cruise control cable (if equipped) and hill holder cable (M/T) at clutch release fork. Remove accessory drive belts. Remove power steering pump with hoses attached. Discharge A/C system and disconnect hoses.
  4. On turbo models, remove upper and lower turbo covers. Disconnect exhaust pipe and necessary lines at turbo. On all models, remove center exhaust pipe and heat shield. Remove air cleaner case and hoses.
  5. On A/T models, remove timing hole plug. Remove torque converter to drive plate bolts. Use care that bolts do not fall into housing. Remove engine stabilizer.
  6. Remove upper bolts attaching engine to transaxle. Attach hoist to engine and support. Remove engine-to-crossmember bolts. Remove remaining engine-to-transaxle bolts. Support transaxle with a floor jack. Remove engine.
