Removal & Installation: Camshaft: Removal

  1. Remove valve covers. Remove distributor cap. Attach dial indicator to case with stem resting against gear of distributor. Rotate distributor and note backlash between distributor gear and distributor gear of camshaft.
  2. Camshaft distributor gear should be replaced if backlash is not within specification. See CAMSHAFT & CASE SPECIFICATIONS table. Remove distributor. Remove timing belt and camshaft sprockets. See TIMING BELT  . Remove coolant pipe.
  3. Remove oil filler. On turbo models, remove EGR pipe. On all models, remove camshaft case bolts. Remove camshaft case and camshaft as a unit. Ensure valve rockers do not fall from cylinder head during case removal.
  4. Remove valve rockers and valve lash adjusters from cylinder head. Mark components for location and keep valve lash adjusters upright. Remove camshaft support. Remove camshaft.
CAUTION: Use care when removing camshaft case as valve rockers may fall during removal. Mark components for location. DO NOT place valve lash adjusters upside down or on their side.
