Strut Assembly & Coil Spring: Inspection

  1. Inspect strut mount for damage. Check bolt threads for damage. Inspect helper, dust cover and upper and lower coil spring seats for cracks or damage. Check strut rod for binding or unusual noise. Check strut for oil leakage, deformed outer shell or deformed or cracked bracket.
  2. Check rod side play. Fully extend rod and mount a dial indicator .4" (10 mm) from end of rod. Apply a load of 4 lbs. (20 N) to end of rod and measure play. Maximum side play is .031" (.80 mm). Replace strut if play exceeds specification. Strut cannot be disassembled.
