Removal - Turbocharged Engines

  1. Remove spare tire and support. Relieve fuel system pressure. Raise vehicle and disconnect fuel pump. Lower vehicle and crank engine about 5 seconds to relieve fuel pressure. Turn ignition switch to the "OFF" position. Remove battery ground cable at battery and engine.
  2. Remove fuel and evaporative control hoses. Remove vacuum hoses and disconnect necessary wiring from engine, radiator, accessories and label. Remove air duct and airflow meter boot. Cover openings to keep out dirt and dust. Remove upper cover.
  3. Remove accelerator cable. Remove center exhaust pipe and heat shield cover from transaxle. On XT models, remove entire cover assembly. Remove cooling fan and power steering pump assembly (if equipped). Wire pump out of working area.
  4. On automatic transaxle models, remove timing hole plug. Remove 4 bolts connecting torque converter to flex plate. Use care that bolts do not fall into housing.
  5. On manual transaxle models, remove clutch return spring and hill-holder cable. Remove engine stabilizer. Remove upper bolts attaching engine to transaxle. Drain coolant and remove radiator assembly. On automatic transaxle models, disconnect oil cooler lines.
  6. Disconnect heater hoses at engine. Remove engine mounting nuts. Remove lower nuts connecting engine to transaxle. Connect sling to power steering bracket and engine stabilizer bracket. Support transaxle with a floor jack. Raise engine, remove from vehicle and place on engine stand.
