Removal - Non-Turbocharged Engines

Disconnect negative battery cable at battery and engine. Remove spare tire and spare tire support from engine compartment. Remove hoses, duct and boot from air cleaner. Remove air cleaner.
Disconnect fuel line from carbon canister. Disconnect carburetor inlet. Allow fuel to drain into a suitable container. Remove brake booster and heater control vacuum hoses from intake manifold. On automatic transaxle models, remove diaphragm vacuum hoses and transaxle cooler lines.
On all models, disconnect wiring harness connectors at engine, distributor, alternator, radiator, starter and accessories and label. Remove retaining clips. Disconnect accelerator cable from carburetor. On manual transaxle models, remove release lever spring. On hill-holder models, disconnect hill-holder cable.
On all models, remove exhaust pipe from exhaust manifold. Remove engine stabilizer bar. Remove accelerator cable. Remove and label evaporative control and vacuum hoses from engine. Remove timing hole plug. Remove 4 mounting bolts which retain engine to transaxle. Ensure that bolts do not fall into housing. Drain coolant. Disconnect radiator and reservoir hoses.
Remove upper radiator bolts and lift out radiator. Remove heater hoses from engine side. Remove starter motor. Remove power steering pump assembly and wire out of working area (if equipped). Remove A/C compressor and wire components out of working area (if equipped).
Disconnect O2 sensor lead. Remove nuts securing engine mounts to crossmember. Lower vehicle and support transaxle with a floor jack. Ensure all components are disconnected and clear from engine. Lift engine with chain hoist attached to front and rear hangers, and separate engine from transaxle.
When separating engine from transaxle, ensure that torque converter remains with transaxle (automatic transaxle only). Remove engine completely and place on engine stand.
