Cylinder Head: Removal

  1. Remove power steering pump and bracket (if equipped). Remove alternator, brackets and stabilizer bar (except A/C models). Remove knock sensor and fuel injectors (turbo models). Remove air bleed hose. Remove oil filler tube. Remove water pipe.
  2. Remove crankshaft pulley by locking crankshaft with Flywheel Stopper (498277000) for manual transaxle models, or Drive Plate Stopper (498497000) for automatic transaxle models. Remove water pump pulley and pulley cover. Remove dipstick and tube. Remove belt cover plate (turbo models). Remove timing belt covers.
  3. Loosen timing belt tensioner mounting bolts on No. 1 cylinder a half turn. Cover end of tensioner wrench clamping tips to avoid damage to crankshaft. Turn tensioner with Tensioner Wrench (499007000) to slacken belt and tighten mounting bolts. Mark direction of timing belt and remove.
  4. Remove crankshaft sprocket. Remove crankshaft sprocket No. 2. Remove both tensioners together with tensioner spring. Remove belt idler. Remove camshaft sprockets by using Camshaft Sprocket Wrench (499207000). Remove timing belt covers. Remove water pump together with hose and pipe.
  5. Remove oil pump by aligning notch in oil pump pulley with bolt position. Remove pump outer rotor from cylinder block. Remove clutch cover and clutch disc (except A/T models). Remove flywheel or flex plate. Remove spark plugs. Remove valve rocker covers.
  6. Remove camshaft cases, camshaft support and camshafts as units. Remove rocker arms and valve lash adjusters, keeping adjusters upright and in correct order. On turbocharged models, remove turbocharger cooling pipe. Remove cylinder heads.
