Fitting Pistons & Rings
- Measure cylinder bore .028" (.71 mm) from top of cylinder in line with crankshaft and again 90 degrees from centerline of crankshaft. Also measure bore at 2 intervals of 1.319" (33.5 mm) from top of cylinder.
- Measure piston 1.059" (26.9 mm) from bottom of skirt and 90 degrees from piston pin hole. Determine clearance between cylinder and piston clearance. Clearance should be .0004-.0016" (.010-.040 mm). Maximum clearance is .0024" (.060 mm). If clearance is incorrect, replace pistons or bore all cylinders to fit oversize pistons.
- If cylinder bore diameter exceeds .0118" (.30 mm) more than standard bore of 3.6214-3.6261" (91.983-92.105 mm) after boring and honing, replace cylinder block. Maximum allowable variation between cylinder bores is .002" (.050 mm).NOTE: Measurement of both pistons and cylinder bores should be performed at 68°F (20°C). All cylinders must be bored to same size and use same diameter oversize pistons.
- Check ring end gap and piston groove clearance. See PISTONS, PINS & RINGS chart for tolerances. Check end gap at bottom of cylinder bore. Position pistons with oil rail stopper pin to center of case. Install piston pin circlip, with dog ear facing out, on stopper pin side of piston. Fit piston rings with "R" or "N" mark facing up.
