Main & Connecting Rod Bearings
- With main bearings in block, set crankshaft into engine block. Using a feeler gauge, measure crankshaft thrust clearance (end play) at center bearing. If limit is exceeded, replace center main bearing (thrust bearing).
- Wipe off oil and dust on surfaces to be measured. Install bearings in cylinder block and set crankshaft into cylinder block. Tighten crankcase bolts to specification and measure oil clearance of crankshaft bearings using Plastigage method.
- Wipe off oil and dust on surfaces to be measured. Install bearings on connecting rod and cap. Tighten rod nuts to specification. Measure oil clearance of connecting rod bearings using Plastigage method.
- Main bearings are available in standard, .001" (.03 mm), .002" (.05 mm) and .010" (.25 mm) undersize. Connecting rod bearings are available in standard, .0012" (.03 mm), .002" (.05 mm) and .0098" (.25 mm) undersize.
NOTE:
Position each connecting rod with the marked side (stamped) facing forward. Make sure connecting rods are assembled correctly by checking their matching number. See Fig 1
