Removal & Installation: Reassembly

  1. Before reassembly, check for loose or bent stud bolts. Use Stud Bolt Wrench (898878600) when replacing stud bolts. Coat threads with a torque-holding sealant (Loctite 270) and tighten to 25-33 ft. lbs. (24-44 N.m).
  2. Check stud bolt length. On 1.6L engines, length should measure 3.563-3.642" (90.5-92.5 mm), and on 1.8L engines it should measure 3.602-3.681" (91.5-93.5 mm). Check crankcase-to-cylinder head mating surface for warpage, and correct by grinding if necessary. Warping limit is .002" (.05 mm).
  3. Lubricate all friction surfaces with engine oil prior to reassembly. With bearings installed on the crankcase half having No. 2 and No. 4 cylinders, install crankshaft and camshaft so punch mark on camshaft gear is visible through chamfered hole in crankshaft gear. See Fig 2 .
  4. Clean mating surfaces of crankcase and apply liquid gasket. Install water jacket "O" ring and back-up ring into crankcase half having No. 2 and No. 4 cylinders. To complete reassembly, reverse disassembly procedure. Tighten crankcase halves and cylinder heads in sequence. See Figure and Fig 1 .
