Timing Belts And Sprockets: Inspection

Visually inspect timing belt for breaks, cracks and excessive wear. Check condition of back side of belt. If any evidence of cracking is found, replace belt. Inspect for oil, grease or coolant saturation. DO NOT  bend timing belt as distortion is fatal to the life of the timing belt. Inspect timing belt tensioner for smooth operation. Tensioner should not be excessively loud. Check timing belt idler for smooth operation. Replace belts in a set only. Ensure tensioner roller shaft squareness does not exceed .020" (.5 mm).
