CRANK SEAL REPLACEMENT

ISSUE & TIP

Replacing the front crankshaft seal on pre-1985 Subaru overhead valve engines is easy to do in the car, even with the radiator still in place:

• Remove the old seal using a pick-style seal remover.
• Position the new seal over the seal opening.
• Place the flat side of a used bearing race and a large flat washer between the new seal and the crankshaft pulley bolt. The used bearing race should be about the same size as the face of the new seal.
• Turn the crankshaft pulley bolt while keeping the crankshaft from turning. The bearing race and flat washer will push the new seal into place.

There's no danger of the seal getting cocked because the race and washer maintain an even pressure all the way around the new seal.

• Keep turning the pulley bolt until the new seal is flush with the engine casting.
