Removal (Turbo Models)
- Remove spare tire. Raise vehicle and disconnect fuel pump. Lower vehicle and start engine. Crank engine for 5 seconds, to relieve fuel pressure. Remove battery ground cable at battery and engine. Disconnect air temperature sensor connector and remove spare tire support.
- Remove fuel and evaporative control hoses. Remove vacuum hoses and disconnect wiring from engine, radiator and accessories. Remove cruise control link assembly and accelerator cable. Pull up windshield washer tank and place it behind right strut tower.
- Remove cooling fan and power steering pump assembly. Place pump on firewall shelf. Remove air duct and air flowmeter boot. Cover openings to keep out dirt and dust. Remove upper cover.
- Remove cross-over exhaust pipe. Loosen catalytic converter shield screws. Loosen turbo heat shield attaching bolts and remove shield. Loosen bolt holding catalytic converter to differential. Remove turbocharger body. Disconnect O2 sensor connector.
- To prevent seizure of turbo body mounting bolts, apply Subaru Guard (P/N 000902821) to threaded portions of nuts and bolts. Leave stand for 1 minute. Loosen bolts and nuts by turning them 10° to 40°. Apply additional Subaru Guard and again leave stand for 1 minute. Remove bolts and nuts. When stud bolt is pulled out, flange bolt (P/N 901000032) can be used instead.
- Remove torque converter to flex plate bolts. Remove upper engine; to transmission nuts and bolts. Drain coolant and remove radiator assembly. Disconnect oil cooler hoses from pipe assembly.
- Disconnect heater hoses at engine. Remove engine mount nuts. Remove lower engine-to-transmission nuts. Connect sling to power steering bracket and pitch stopper bracket. Support transmission with a floor jack. Raise engine and remove from vehicle.
