Wiping windshield, general
The windshield wiping function keeps the windshield free of water or snow, for example. Two versions of the windshield wiper system are available:
- Vehicles without code V54 (Rain/light sensor) (comfort windshield wipers with intermittent wipe and automatic wipe/wash)
- Vehicles with code V54 (Rain/light sensor) (comfort windshield wipers with intermittent wipe and automatic wipe/wash)
Function requirements, general
- Circuit "15" ON or circuit "30g" ON (comfort status or run-on active)
The comfort status (circuit "30g" ON) is active for about 75 s after unlocking the vehicle or opening a door. The comfort status or run-on is also active after the ignition has been switched off (circuit "15" OFF). During this time, certain functions of the windshield wiper system can be switched on using the windshield wiper system switch (S4/4). The status of the driver door is read in by the center SAM control unit (N10/10) via the driver door central locking microswitch (M4/6s1). The center SAM control unit then transmits this status via the interior CAN (CAN B) to the driver-side SAM control unit (N10/11). The driver-side SAM control unit receives the status of circuit "15" ON of the ignition lock (S2) from the vehicle interior fuse and relay module (F2) via a direct line. In order to do this, the ignition lock switches a relay in the vehicle interior fuse and relay module, which switches circuit "15g" through to the driver-side SAM control unit.
The windshield wiper function is comprised of the following subfunctions:
- Single wipe function sequence
- Intermittent wipe function sequence
- Function sequence, wiping at specified wiping speed
- Function sequence, service position
Single wipe function sequence
Additional function requirements for single wipe
- Circuit "15" ON
If the windshield wiper system switch is pulled backwards to the "Wash" position for t ≤ 0.75 s in the direction of travel, the "Single wipe" function is carried out (in parallel to actuation of the windshield washer system pump (M5/1)) and a wipe cycle is carried out. If the windshield wiper system switch is held in the pulled position for t > 0.75 s and then released again, 3 more wipe cycles are carried out (after-wipe function).
If the windshield wiper system switch is held for t > 0.75 s, the "Wash windshield" function is carried out, and wipe cycles are performed for as long as the windshield wiper system switch is being held (Wash function). After releasing the windshield washer system switch, the 3 additional wipe cycles of the after-wipe function are carried out. The windshield washer system pump (M5/1) is also actuated for as long as the windshield washer system switch is being pulled. If the windshield washer system switch is operated, the "Wash" status of the windshield washer system switch is read in directly by the center SAM control unit, but then transmitted via the interior CAN to the driver-side SAM control unit, whereupon this actuates the wiper motor (M6/1) directly.

Intermittent wipe function sequence
The intermittent wipe function sequence is implemented differently depending on which version of the windshield wiper system is installed:
- Intermittent wipe function sequence in vehicles without code V54 (Rain/light sensor)
- Intermittent wipe function sequence (automatic wiping) in vehicles with code V54 (Rain/light sensor)

The intermittent wipe function is activated by moving the windshield washer system switch downwards to switch position "1". The interval time is adjustable and can be set by rotating the inner ring of the windshield wiper system switch to switch position "1", "2", "3" or "4":
- Switch position "1" (starting position): Wiping with a longer interval
- Switch position "2": Wiping with a medium interval
- Switch position "3": Wiping with a shorter interval
- Switch position "4": Wiping with an extremely short interval
The control of the interval is taken over by the driver-side SAM control unit. The driver-side SAM control unit reads in the positions for "intermittent wipe" of the windshield washer system switch via a direct line and then actuates the wiper motor directly. When the wiper is switched on or the interval is increased to a higher level, a wipe cycle is always carried out. The interval times are:
- Switch position "1": 14 seconds
- Switch position "2": 8 seconds
- Switch position "3": 4 seconds
- Switch position "4": 1 second
The intermittent wipe function is interrupted or aborted under the following conditions:
- Driver door opened with circuit "15" OFF
- Circuit "30g" (comfort status or run-on) OFF
- Windshield washer system switch moved to switch position "0", "2" or "3"
- Blocking of wiper motor

- Engine running (except model 453.091/391/491)
- Drivetrain operational (model 453.091/391/491)
The "Engine running" status is received by the driver-side SAM control unit from the ME-SFI [ME] control unit (N3/10) (except model 453.091/391/491) over the interior CAN. On model 453.091/391/491 the driver-side SAM control unit receives the "Drivetrain operational" status over the interior CAN from the electric drive control unit (N127) (only model 453.091/391/491).
The intermittent wipe function (automatic wiping) is also activated by moving the windshield washer system switch downwards to switch position "1". The sensitivity of the rain/light sensor (B38/2) in vehicles with code V54 (Rain/light sensor) is set by rotating the inner ring of the windshield wiper system switch to position "1", "2", "3" or "4":
- Switch position "1": Low rain/light sensor sensitivity
- Switch position "2": Medium rain/light sensor sensitivity
- Switch position "3": High rain/light sensor sensitivity
- Switch position "4": Extremely high rain/light sensor sensitivity
The control of the interval is taken over by the driver-side SAM control unit. The driver-side SAM control unit reads in the position for "Automatic wiping" of the windshield washer system switch via a direct line and transmits this position via the rain/light sensor LIN (LIN B16) to the rain/light sensor. It then uses the position of the windshield washer system switch and the degree of wetness on the windshield to determine the frequency of required wiping cycles, and then transmits the appropriate request via the rain/light sensor LIN to the driver-side SAM control unit, which then actuates the wiper motor accordingly. When the wiper is switched on or the interval is increased to a higher level, a wipe cycle is always carried out. The interval is also controlled as a function of the vehicle speed. In order to do this, the driver-side SAM control unit receives the vehicle speed from the Electronic Stability Program control unit (N30/4) via the interior CAN and transmits this via the rain/light sensor LIN to the rain/light sensor. If the vehicle speed or the signal of the rain/light sensor is unavailable for some reason or other, the driver- side SAM control unit falls back on fixed parameters and the interval times are:
- Switch position "1": 14 seconds
- Switch position "2": 8 seconds
- Switch position "3": 4 seconds
- Switch position "4": 1 second
The intermittent wipe function (automatic wiping) is interrupted or canceled under the following conditions:
- Circuit "15" OFF
- Windshield washer system switch moved to switch position "0", "2" or "3"
- Blocking of wiper motor
Function sequence, wiping at specified wiping speed
The wipe function with predefined wiping speed is activated by pushing down the windshield wiper system switch to switch position "2" (continuous wipe at slow wiping speed) or switch position "3" (continuous wipe at fast wiping speed).
Additional function requirements for continuous wipe at fast wiping speed:
- Engine running (except model 453.091/391/491)
- Drivetrain operational (model 453.091/391/491)
The position for the wiping stages of the windshield wiper system switch is read in directly by the driver-side SAM control unit. The driver-side SAM control unit then actuates the wiper motor (M6/1) directly. The wiper motor has two stages, and depending on which switch position is selected, stage 1 for "Continuous wipe at slow wiping speed" or stage 2 for "Continuous wipe at fast wiping speed" is actuated directly by the driver-side SAM control unit. To activate continuous wiping at fast wiping speed, the engine must be running (circuit "61" ON) on vehicles with engine 281 (except model 453.091/391/491). On model 453.091/391/491 the drivetrain must be operational (in "READY" status).
The wiping function with predefined wiping speed is interrupted or canceled under the following conditions:
- Windshield washer system switch moved to switch position "0" or "1"
- Driver door opened with circuit "15" OFF
- Circuit "30g" (comfort status or run-on) OFF
- Blocking of wiper motor
- Activation of automatic speed reduction function (except CODE 494 (USA version))
"Continuous wipe at fast wiping speed" is also canceled and the system switched back to continuous wiping at slow wiping speed if the engine (except model 453.091/391/491) or the drivetrain (model 453.091/391/491) is switched off.

If the windshield wiper system is switched off after operation using the windshield wiper system switch, this is detected by the driver-side SAM control unit. The wiper motor is then returned to the rest position by the driver-side SAM control unit. The driver-side SAM control unit is notified that the wiper arms are in the rest position via a signal contact that is integrated in the wiper motor. The wiper motor is also actuated by the driver-side SAM control unit after the ignition has been switched off for as long as comfort status or run-on (circuit "30g") is active.
Function sequence, service position
The front windshield wipers can be stopped in the center of the windshield in order to carry out service and repair work. The windshield wipers can be moved to service position when:
- Continuous wiping at fast wiping speed is requested (windshield washer system switch in position "3")
- The engine is switched off
- Circuit "30g" ON (comfort status or run-on active)
The windshield wipers are then moved to the service position at slow wiping speed. To move the windshield wiper back to the rest position, the windshield wiper system switch must be operated again.
