  Risk of death  caused by vehicle slipping or toppling off of the lifting platform. Align vehicle between vehicle lift columns and position the four support plates at the vehicle lift support points specified by the vehicle manufacturer. AS00.00-Z-0010-01A
WARNING Risk of accident  from vehicle starting off by itself when engine running. Risk of injury  (bruises and burns) resulting from working on the engine while it is being started or when it is running. Secure vehicle to prevent it from starting off by itself. Wear closed and snug-fitting work clothes. Do not touch hot or rotating parts. AS00.00-Z-0005-01A
WARNING Risk of injury  to skin and eyes suffering scalding from contact with hot coolant spray. Risk of poisoning  from swallowing coolant. Do not open cooling system unless coolant temperature is below 90 °C. Open cap slowly and release the pressure. Do not pour coolant into beverage containers.
Wear protective gloves, protective clothing and safety glasses.

REMOVING Remove     
1 Remove maintenance flap    
2 Remove cover over engine    
3 Turn cap (2) on expansion reservoir (1) half a revolution counterclockwise, relieve overpressure and then unscrew cap (2)    
4 Remove underfloor paneling    
  Drain off     
5 Remove coolant hose (12) from coolant line (13), drain coolant and collect in a suitable container Engine 281.910 in model 453

6 Remove coolant hose (14) from coolant line (15), drain coolant and collect in a suitable container Engine 281.910 in model 453

  Pour in     
9 Attach coolant hose (6) to coolant line (7) IMPORTANT Replace clamp. SPECIAL TOOL Hose clamp pliers Figure
10 Attach coolant hose (5) to coolant line (8) IMPORTANT Replace clamp.

13 Unscrew cap (3) from breather hose (4)    
14 Fill cooling system via expansion reservoir (1) IMPORTANT The coolant level in the expansion reservoir (1) must be at the upper marking.
FLUID SPECIFICATION Cooling system

15 Remove vent screw (10) by approx. 2 revolutions IMPORTANT Wait until the coolant flows out from the connection fitting (11).  
16 Unscrew cap (17) from breather connection (16) Engine 281.910 in model 453
IMPORTANT Wait until the coolant flows out from the breather connection (16).
 
17 Tighten vent screw (10).    
18 Screw on cap (17) Engine 281.910 in model 453  
19 Correct coolant level in expansion reservoir (1) IMPORTANT The coolant level in the expansion reservoir (1) must be at the upper marking.
FLUID SPECIFICATION Cooling system
*BF20.00-P-1001-06SR 
20 Seal expansion reservoir (1) with the cap (2)    
21 Screw cap (3) onto breather hose (4) securely    
22 Allow the engine to warm up until the cooler fan motor has switched on and then turn off    
23.1 Repeat the venting process until there in no further air coming out of the connection fitting (11) Engine 281.920 in model 453
NOTES The venting process (operation steps 3 and 13 to 22) must be repeated at least once. Otherwise it can lead to damage to the engine.
 
23.2 Repeat the venting process until there in no further air coming out of the connection fitting (11) and the breather connection (16) Engine 281.910 in model 453
NOTES The venting process (operation steps 3 and 13 to 22) must be repeated at least once. Otherwise it can lead to damage to the engine.
 
INSPECT Check     
24 Check cooling system for leak tightness   AR20.00-P-1010SR 
INSTALLING Install     
25 Install underfloor paneling    
26 Install cover over engine    
27 Install maintenance flap
