Energy management, general
Energy management manages the provision (supply) and consumption (management) of electrical energy with the aim of ensuring mobility and a stable supply of all electrical consumers.
The following components are involved in energy management:
- Battery sensor (B95)
- On-board electrical system battery (G1) (power storage and supply when the engine is off)
- Alternator (G2) (power generation)
- Driver-side SAM control unit (N10/11) (Master control unit for energy management and alternator management)
Alternator management
The alternator management is integrated into the driver-side SAM control unit (N10/11) and it forms the interface for the energy management to the alternator. The driver-side SAM control unit communicates with the alternator over the powerplant-LIN (LIN C1). Alternator management regulates the alternator's power output according to the energy management specifications taking engine load into consideration. The recording and evaluation of the relevant variables for this are conducted by the following components:
- Alternator
- Driver SAM control unit
Energy management contains the following subfunctions, which are described in separate documents:

- Automatic engine start/stop function (only vehicles with code B03 (ECO start/stop function))
The "automatic engine start/stop function" is observed from the point-of-view of the energy management. Information on the "engine management start-stop function" is available in the function description for the "gasoline injection and ignition system with direct injection function".
