Symbol and ambiance illumination in general

The symbol and ambiance illumination feature provides the brightness- adjustable illumination of all controls as well as the illumination of the vehicle interior. Symbol and ambiance illumination encompasses the following subfunctions:

Function sequence for search and symbol illumination

The switch and controls and symbol illumination makes it easier for the driver to find important controls.

IMPORTANT Vehicles with code 877 (Ambiance illumination) are always also equipped with code K36 (Instrument cluster with 8.9 cm (3.5") color display).

The search and symbol illumination is activated by switching on the standing lights. The luminosity of the switch and controls and symbol illumination can be adjusted using the "Display" menu in the instrument cluster. The driver can choose between 5 brightness levels.

The center SAM control unit reads in the "Standing lights ON" status of the combination switch and evaluates it. The center SAM control unit generates the circuit 58d signal from the incoming information and places it on the interior CAN for actuating the search and symbol illumination.

The instrument cluster receives the "circuit 58d" signal and then actuates the following components directly:

The "circuit 58d signal" on the interior CAN is also received by the audio gateway control unit, which places it on the telematics CAN. The Smart Radio Multimedia Navigator (vehicles with code 535 (Smart Media System)) receives this signal and then actuates its switch and controls illumination and locator lighting accordingly.

The climate control unit actuates the climate control operating unit on the basis of the "circuit 58d" signal on the interior CAN (with code I01 (Automatic air conditioning)) and prompts it to actuate its switch and controls and symbol illumination.

If the standing lights are switched off by the driver, the center SAM control unit removes the "circuit 58d" signal from the interior CAN in order to deactivate the switch and controls and symbol illumination.

Function sequence for ambiance illumination (with code 877 (Ambiance illumination))

The ambiance illumination is switched on and off as follows:

In the process, different areas of the vehicle interior are illuminated indirectly.

The ambiance illumination can be activated and deactivated via a corresponding menu in the display of the instrument cluster. The luminosity can be set in five stages.

Automatic activation/deactivation of the ambiance illumination when the vehicle is unlocked/locked using the transmitter key

If the center SAM control unit receives the "Unlock central locking" request from the transmitter key, it transmits the request to switch on the ambiance illumination via the interior CAN to the instrument cluster. The instrument cluster transmits the request to switch on the ambiance illumination via the additional instruments LIN bus to the additional instruments, which actuate the following components of the ambiance illumination directly:

If the vehicle is unlocked and the doors remain closed, the ambiance illumination is switched off (dimmed) after t = 40 s.

If the vehicle is locked, any actuation of the ambiance lighting stops immediately (the signal for switching on the ambiance illumination is removed from the interior CAN by the center SAM control unit).

Ambiance illumination switched on/off when a door or the liftgate is opened/closed

The opening of a driver door or the liftgate is detected by the central locking microswitch of the respective door or the liftgate. The center SAM control unit evaluates the signals of the central locking microswitches and transmits the request to switch on the ambiance illumination via the interior CAN to the instrument cluster. The instrument cluster transmits the request to switch on the ambiance illumination via the additional instruments LIN to the additional instruments, which actuate the components of the instrument illumination (see above) directly.

If the opened vehicle door or liftgate is not closed again, the ambiance illumination is switched off after t = 4 min.

An automatic shutoff of the ambiance illumination takes place after closing the opened door or liftgate after t = 20 s (the signal for switching on the ambiance illumination is removed from the interior CAN by the center SAM control unit).

If the vehicle is locked, the center SAM control unit terminates any actuation of the lamps immediately (dimmed setting).

Ambiance illumination switched on/off when the standing lights are activated/deactivated

The center SAM control unit reads in the status of the combination switch and evaluates it. If a request for the standing lights is present (standing lights ON), the center SAM control unit places a request for switching on the ambiance illumination onto the interior CAN. The instrument cluster receives the signal and transmits a request to switch on the ambiance illumination via the additional instruments LIN to the additional instruments, which actuate the components of the ambiance illumination (see above) directly.

The ambiance illumination is actuated for as long as the standing lights are activated.
