Service Information: Matt Paintwork - Si98.00-P-0017A
Model all with matt paintwork
Vehicles with dull clear varnish exhibit a significantly reduced degree of luster. The regal-looking matt effect is created by flatting agents in the clear-coat. The flatting agent in the clear varnish produces an uneven surface, thereby causing - in contrast to bright clear varnishes - diffuse light reflections, which result in the "matt effect". MAGNO paints can only be ordered through the designo individualization offer. SHAPE paints are also matt paints, which - in contrast to MAGNO paints - are available as series colors.
Special procedures must be followed during repair, care and cleaning!
Paint repair
In close cooperation with the Mercedes-Benz paint partners (SI98.00-P-0002A) repair solutions have been developed for all the paint systems. The repair procedure corresponds to a conventional paint finish with the exception of the clear varnish system that is to be used.
The following special considerations should be observed:
Paint repair
When making a repair, the color and the luster of the vehicle must be matched accurately. Therefore, before starting the repair, a sample panel should be made first with a base coat and a dull clear varnish. It may be necessary. to produce several sample panels until the color and luster match the vehicle involved.
The luster can also be measured using a reflectometer. For matt paint finishes, it is 23_E (±7) when measured at a 60_° angle.
When producing the sample panel care must be taken to ensure that all the application parameters are selected in such a manner that they can be used later on for the paint finish. Different application parameters when producing the sample panel and the subsequent paint finish could exert a negative influence on the ability to match up the color, luster, etc.
Painting the parts "edge to edge" is recommended. If this is not possible, we recommend a large repair of the entire damaged side of the vehicle.
Furthermore, spot repairs and touch-ups on parts are not recommended.
A film on repairing matt paint "AR post-repair refinishing: Matt special paint finish [Model Car]" can be called up through SD-Media and the "Frame/Body/Painting" category, in which the special considerations to be given to matt paint post-repair refinishing are presented.
Final operations
When performing post-repair refinishing on matt paints, absolute cleanliness must be given, as dirt inclusions and paint faults cannot be removed by polishing as is the case with conventional systems. Any dirt inclusions must be removed before the last spray application of clear-coat.
No special working units have been created for matt paintwork because the repair procedure is the same as normal, apart from the special considerations listed above.
If however, any additional work should be required, this can be additionally invoiced through operation item 98-9545 Additional work for special paint finishes.
The specifications of the repair paint manufacturers must always be followed during repair. These are available in the After-Sales Paint Technology guidelines in the "Workshop & Knowledge" category
http://aftersales.mercedes-benz.com are described in the following.
Care and cleaning
Maintenance
A matt finish requires special care to ensure that the dull surface is retained. The use of paint cleaners, grinding and polishing products such as gloss preservers (wax) on matt finishes must be avoided at all times.
A vehicle with a matt finish must never be polished.
This will cause severe damage to the dull surface in the form of high-gloss, checkered areas. If polishing is performed, the matt effect can only be restored by painting again.
Excessive rubbing with unsuitable products can also cause brightening of the matt effect.
After any rubbing with unsuitable products the matt effect can only be restored by renewed painting.
Cleaning
The following rules must be complied with for the correct care of matt clear varnishes:
- When cleaning manually, a soft sponge, neutral soap and lots of water are to be used. Always avoid washing in direct sunlight.
- Frequent use of washing facilities can increase the level of gloss thereby reducing the matt effect.
- Any insects and bird lime stuck to the surface must be removed immediately. We recommend soaking in water. In the case of difficult-to-remove insects, we recommend spraying them first with insect remover (see Repair materials table).
- Any substances containing resin, grease and oil as well as fuel and wax on the paint surface must be removed immediately using a cloth soaked in commercially available benzine. Caution should be exercised here and no excessive pressure should be applied to the paint surface.
- Carefully remove any tar stain and tar blemishes using commercially available benzine and without applying too much pressure (Do not use any tar remover).
- Avoid sticking any adhesive labels, films, magnetic signs or such like to the paint surface, as the adhesive residue could damage the paint.
- To remove any metal/industrial dust an approved metal dust remover may be used. It should be ensured here that the metal dust remover is used on a thoroughly-cleaned surface, and that the surface is then thoroughly cleaned with clean water. On no account should metal dust remover be used several times in succession.
