Interlock circuit: The interlock circuit is used to protect people against unintended contact with high-voltage components. In order to do this, a 12 V/88Hz interlock signal is looped through all the high-voltage on- board electrical system components that can be removed or opened. To do this there is a jumper in each removable high-voltage plug connection which interrupts the interlock circuit during removal of the high-voltage plug connection. The interlock circuit is also led switched in a series over the 12 V control units plug connection of the high-voltage components.
Location
The electric refrigerant compressor is located off-center at the left rear in the engine compartment.

The electric refrigerant compressor is responsible for the following:
- Reading in of signals
- Evaluation of input factors
- Transmitting signals
- Refrigerant compressor, rpm specified value
Reading in of signals
The signals are read in over the electric drive LIN (LIN EL). The functions that use these signals are described in the individual function descriptions (see the appropriate block diagram or function schematic). The following signals on the electric drive LIN are read in, for example by the electric refrigerant compressor:
- Request and target engine speed for electric refrigerant compressor
- Shutoff of electric refrigerant compressor by energy management
Evaluation of input factors
The input factors that have been read in are evaluated by the electric refrigerant compressor whereupon the relevant components are actuated.
Transmitting signals
The following signals are sent by the electric refrigerant compressor over the electric drive LIN:
- Operating state
- Compressor speed
Structure
The electric refrigerant compressor consists of the following three main groups:
- Control unit
- High voltage electric motor
- Spiral compressor
The spiral compressor consists of two intertwined spirals, one of which is permanently connected to the housing while the second is rotated in a circle in the first one. The spirals form several increasingly smaller chambers within the coils; these then draw in the refrigerant on the intake side. The refrigerant compressed in this manner reaches the center of these chambers where it is then discharged at the pressure side in compressed form.

The electric refrigerant compressor draws in the cold, gaseous refrigerant from the evaporator, compresses it, and delivers it to the condenser. The speed of the electric refrigerant compressor is regulated to match the request over the electric drive LIN by the electric drive control unit N127. The request to switch on and to regulate the electric refrigerant compressor is received by the electric drive control unit over the interior CAN (CAN B) from the climate control unit for climate control in the vehicle interior or also with code V03 (Battery cooling system) from the battery management system control unit over the electric drive CAN (CAN EL) for cooling the low temperature coolant circuit of the high-voltage battery. Similarly, if it is necessary to cool the high-voltage control unit box, the cooling request for the entire low temperature coolant circuit can be requested from the power electronics control unit (N129/1) over the electric drive CAN. The speed of the electric refrigerant compressor is continuously regulated from 0 to 100% depending on the specified value (cooling output).
