Trip computer (TRIP) function, general
The trip computer provides data and information on average fuel consumption, trip time, average speed, travel distance and remaining range.
The trip computer provides the following display screens:
- "After start" (short-distance memory)
- "After reset" (long-distance memory)
- "After start" (eco score)
- "Consumption l/100 km or mpg (miles per gallon) (e.g. USA, Australia)"
The information displayed refers to the point in time of the last reset of the short-distance memory ("After start") or of the long-distance memory ("After reset").
The "After start" or "After reset" information is shown on the multifunction display (A1p13) of the instrument cluster as follows:
- Distance traveled
- Time elapsed
- Average consumption
- Average transportation speed
The trip computer comprises the following subfunctions:
- Function sequence, travel distance display after start/after reset
- Function sequence, time display after start/after reset
- Function sequence for the average speed display
- Function sequence for display of present consumption and composite mileage
- Function sequence for displaying eco score after start (driving style analysis)
- Function sequence for remaining distance display
- Function sequence for display reset
Function sequence, travel distance display after start/after reset
The travel distance is calculated on the basis of the wheel speeds. The Electronic Stability Program control unit (N30/4) sends information on the wheel speeds over the interior CAN to the instrument cluster. The instrument cluster calculates the traveled distance from the wheel speeds.
The travel distance "After start" is displayed in a range of 0 to 9999 km.
If a period of more than t = 4 h lies between the time when circuit 15 is switched off and then switched on again, then the "After start" odometer is automatically reset to 0.
If the odometer reading is between 6213 and 9999 and the distance unit is changed (e.g. from km to miles), the odometer will automatically be reset to 0. This reset remains active even if the unit is changed again.
The units can be changed in the "Setup" menu in the "Display" submenu. The distance unit can be changed from "km" to "miles" in the "Distance" display window.
The "After reset" travel distance is calculated in the same way as the "After start" travel distance. The "After reset" travel distance is shown within a range between 0 and 9, 999 km.
Depending on the setting in the instrument cluster or the coded national version, the travel distance is shown in:
- Kilometers (e.g Economic Commission for Europe (ECE), Japan)
- Miles (e.g. USA, Australia)
Function sequence, time display after start/after reset
With circuit 15 ON, the time after start is added up by means of a time counter. The display ranges from 0 to 999 h and 59 min.
The "After reset" time is calculated and displayed in the same way as the "After start" time.
Function sequence for the average speed display
The trip computer calculates the average speed from the ratio between the travel distance driven and the time passed (trip time) since the last reset of the short-distance memory or long-distance memory. The instrument cluster calculates the travel distance based on the wheel speeds.
Depending on the setting (kilometers/miles) and the coded national version, the average speed is shown in:
- Km/h (kilometers per hour)
- Mph (miles per hour)
Function sequence for display of present consumption and composite mileage
The trip computer calculates the fuel consumption using the following information:
- Fuel consumption signal from ME-SFI control unit (N3/10)
- Travel distance covered "After start" or "After reset"
Depending on the setting (kilometers/miles) and the coding of the national version of the instrument cluster, the fuel consumption is displayed in:
- l/100 km (liters per 100 kilometers)
- Mpg (miles per gallon)
- km/l (kilometers per liter)
The ME-SFI control unit sends the relevant information via the interior CAN to the instrument cluster. The present consumption is displayed together with the range. The displays are shown in the form of a bar display.
Function sequence for displaying eco score after start (driving style analysis)
The "eco score after start" display graphically displays the individual handling characteristics in the form of a bar graph. The following information is displayed:
- Acceleration characteristic
- Anticipative driving
- Shifting
- The mean value of the three disciplines yields the overall score (in percent)
The data required for evaluation is sent by the Smart Radio Multimedia Navigator via the telematics CAN, the audio gateway control unit and then the interior CAN to the instrument cluster.
Function sequence for remaining distance display
The trip computer determines the expected range from the ratio between the current tank capacity and the average fuel consumption.
The current tank content is registered by the fuel tank fuel level indicator fill level sensor (M3/3b1) and read in directly by the instrument cluster.
The average fuel consumption is gathered from the short-distance memory or long-distance memory.
Function sequence for display reset
The TRIP computer is reset in the "Reset values?" menu by pressing the OK button (S110s7) in the left multifunction steering wheel button group (S110) for vehicles with CODE K36 (Instrument cluster with color 8.9 cm (3.5") display) or the OK button (S4/5s2) for vehicles with CODE K35 (Instrument cluster with monochrome display). Here, the reset is only carried out for the currently displayed information.
For vehicles with instrument cluster with color 8.9 cm (3.5") display, the audio gateway control unit (N93/1) receives the status of the OK button of the left multifunction steering wheel button group over the steering wheel clock spring contact (A45/1) and sends this over the interior CAN (CAN B) to the instrument cluster. On vehicles with an instrument cluster with monochrome display, the menu guidance button group (S4/5) sends the status straight to the instrument cluster.
