General information on stationary charging
When the charging cable is connected to the charger feed socket (X58/23) and to the private (stationary service line) or a public power network (charging station), the high-voltage battery (G5) is externally charged.
There are three charging options:
- Via the mains outlet with a Mode 2 charging cable
- Via the wallbox charging station with a Mode 3 charging cable
- Via a public charging station with a Mode 3 charging cable
The following components, which communicate with each other over the CAN network, are the primary components involved in this external charging process:
- Powertrain control unit (N127)
- High-voltage battery charger (7 kW charger) control unit (N83/5)
- High-voltage battery charger (22 kW charger) control unit (N83/10)
- Powerline gateway control unit (N24/5)
- Battery management system control unit (N82/2)
- High-voltage battery (G5)

Charging process
When the external power source is connected with a charging cable, the high-voltage battery charger (7 kW charger) control unit or the high-voltage battery charger (22 kW charger) control unit communicates over a discrete control line (Control Pilot) with the control box in the charging cable or the charging station. The performance data on the power supply equipment is sent here, and the charger's power consumption is adapted appropriately. Only then does the high-voltage battery charger initiate the charging process. In the case of intelligent charging stations, the powerline gateway control unit also communicates over the discrete control line (Control Pilot). Data for this is transmitted according to the protocol specified in ISO/IEC 15118.
Because the maximum possible charging current depends on the charging cable or is dictated by the charging station, both versions of the high-voltage battery charger control unit can be used to charge at a mains outlet as well as at a public or wallbox charging station. When charging at a mains outlet, the charging current may have to be limited so as not to overload the local power network. The maximum permissible charging current can therefore be set using the in-cable control box. The Mode 2 charging cable contains an in-cable control box with a ground fault circuit interrupter (RCD) and Control Pilot as per IEC 61851. It is fitted with a mains plug at one end and a 5-pin socket at the other end. When charging, the charging cable connector is locked at the vehicle (market-specific).
Every time the charging cable is unplugged, the charging current is reset to the default value of 6 A.
The Mode 3 charging cable has no in-cable control box. The protection functions (fuses, RCD) are provided by the charging station or wallbox. The charging cable is fitted with a 7-pin socket at each end. When charging, the charging cable connector is locked at the vehicle and at the charging station (market-specific).

The 7-pin socket has 5 high-voltage connections (L1, L2, L3, N and PE) for supplying the alternating voltage and 2 signal contacts for Control Pilot (CP) and Proximity (PP). Data is exchanged with the charging station via the CP contact while the vehicle detects a plugged-in charging cable via the PP contact. In vehicles with high-voltage battery charger (7 kW charger) control unit, only the high-voltage connections L1, N and PE are used. Above the socket is an indicator LED which indicates the status of the charging process. If a charging cable is connected correctly, the socket is locked. The meanings of the associated display variants are listed in the table below.
The charging cable connector is locked automatically and is unlocked via the central locking system (key or central locking switch).

The 5-pin socket has 3 high-voltage connections for supplying the alternating voltage and 2 signal contacts for Control Pilot (CP) and Proximity (PP). Data is exchanged with the charging station via the CP contact while the vehicle detects a plugged-in charging cable via the PP contact. There is no locking mechanism in the socket.

Charging
When the powertrain control unit has received the signals for selector lever position "P" and the charging cable plugged-in status, it enables charging. The charging process commences. Depending on availability, the battery is charged with one phase on a 120 V AC power network (NAFTA) or 230 V AC network (ECE), or with 3 phases on a 400 V three-phase network. The charge indicator LED at the charger feed socket flashes green to show that the charging process has been initiated. When the charging process is complete, the charge indicator LED shines with a steady green light.
If faults occur before or during charging, the charge indicator LED at the charger feed socket flashes red.

If necessary, the battery (G1) is also charged via the DC/DC converter control unit (N83/1).
