Remove/install front spring - AR32.20-P-0200MCU

MODIFICATION NOTES

11.5.11 Zinc washer installation in spring cup added    
REMOVINGINSTALLING Remove/install     
DANGER Risk of injury  caused by pinching or crushing  when working on springs or spring bodies that are under tension Use only approved tensioning devices; shield off hazard area if necessary.
Check special tools for damage and proper operation (visual inspection).
Wear protective gloves.

IMPORTANT Daimler AG has not specifically called for the springs (1) to be changed in pairs, but it is advisable    
1 Remove left or right front suspension strut   AR32.25-P-1017MCU 
2 Clamp assembly tool set (2) in vise IMPORTANT Check SPECIAL TOOL assembly tool set (2) is firmly seated in vise.

3 Insert suspension strut with spring (1) into the assembly tool set (2) and slightly pretighten NOTES The spring windings (1) must be reliably contained. This serves to prevent the SPECIAL TOOL assembly tool set (2) slipping off.  
4 Tension spring (1) IMPORTANT Do not use an impact wrench when clamping.
Clamp spring (1) far enough until the spring cup (3) is exposed
INSTALLATION NOTES Check spring (1) is correctly seated on end stop (8).
 
5 Unscrew nut (4) NOTES Do not turn the piston rod. Otherwise the shock absorber (7) may be damaged.
IMPORTANT Counterhold the piston rod of the shock absorber (7) using a Torx bit (size T45) and a shank length of 100 mm.
If the nut (4) is jammed, push back the boot and SPECIAL TOOL fasten holding device (9) to piston rod of shock absorber (7) and counterhold using SPECIAL TOOL open end wrench (10).

6 Remove rubber mount (5) with thrust bearing (6) INSTALLATION IMPORTANT : Check that the thrust bearing (6) is in good condition and is not worn; replace if necessary.  
7 Remove spring cup (3) and pull shock absorber (7) out of spring (1) INSTALLATION IMPORTANT : Use new spring cup (3) with zinc shim (11).  
8.1 Remove zinc shim (12) For vehicles with zinc shim (12).
IMPORTANT If necessary, expand the zinc shim (12) on the shock absorber (7) from below.
INSTALLATION IMPORTANT : Insert new zinc shim (12). Check end stop (8) is correctly positioned. The zinc shim (12) must be flush-fitted to the lower spring seat.
 
8.2 Clean lower spring seat of shock absorber (7) using wire brush For vehicles without zinc shim (12).
INSTALLATION IMPORTANT : Insert new zinc shim (12). Check end stop (8) is correctly positioned. The zinc shim (12) must be flush-fitted to the lower spring seat.
 
9 Release spring (1) NOTES Springs (1), that were installed without any zinc shims (11, 12), have to be replaced with a new spring (1) with larger diameter. This serves to prevent the suspension strut from being damaged.
IMPORTANT Do not use an impact wrench.
INSTALLATION IMPORTANT : Do not scratch spring (1), paint damage should be repaired. Preservation agent

10 Install in the reverse order
