Risk of injury
When working on the steering hydraulics, and in particular when adjusting the hydraulic steering limiters or removing an adjustment screw from the hydraulic steering limiters, escaping power steering fluid under high pressure can cause serious eye injuries.
If an adjustment screw is turned in with fewer than three rotations, there is also the danger that the small overlap of the thread will cause it to pop out. Flying objects can cause serious injuries.
Risk of poisoning
Swallowing power steering fluid may lead to symptoms of poisoning such as headaches, dizziness, stomach ache, vomiting, diarrhea, cramps and unconsciousness.
Safety precautions/instructions
- Wear protective gloves, protective clothing and safety glasses.
- Adjustment screws for the hydraulic steering limiters must still be turned in by at least three rotations after adjustment.
If necessary, fully unscrew the adjustment screws at the center steering position and screw them back in prior to adjusting the steering limiters. While doing this, determine and note down the number of turns. When adjusting the steering limiters, note by how many rotations the adjustment screws are turned in or out to ensure that the adjustment screws are still screwed in by at least three turns after adjustment.
- When removing an adjustment screw, there will still be some residual pressure in the power steering fluid even after a waiting time of approximately 1 hour.
- Do not pour steering oil into beverage bottles.
First aid measures
Ingestion
- Have the person affected drink plenty of water with the addition of activated charcoal.
- If large amounts are swallowed, consult a physician.
Contact with eyes
- If hydraulic fluid gets into the eyes, rinse the eyes immediately with a generous supply of clean water/eye rinse.
- If hydraulic fluid spray injures the skin or eyes, consult a physician immediately.
