Check condition and operation of trailer hitch - AP31.11-P-3152EW

MODEL 166, 207, 212, 218.9 with CODE 550 (Trailer coupling)

INSPECT Check     
1.1 Open liftgate MODEL 166  
1.2 Open left side stowage compartment in luggage compartment MODEL 207, 212, 218.9  
2.1 Pull left lower release switch on liftgate MODEL 166
IMPORTANT Ball neck (2) disengages and swings downward.
 
2.2 Turn unlocking wheel (1) approx 90° counterclockwise MODEL 207, 212, 218.9
IMPORTANT Ball neck (2) disengages and swings downward.
 
3 Check function of indicator lamp (1a) IMPORTANT Indicator lamp (1a) must flash when the ball neck (2) is disengaged.
IMPORTANT MODEL 166
Indicator lamp (1a) is in release switch.
If there are problems:

Determine and rectify cause, subject to separate repair order.
 
4 Swing the ball neck (2) outwards below the bumper    
5 Check lock of ball neck (2) and function of indicator lamp (1a) IMPORTANT Ball neck (2) must engage and lock in the vertical position, the indicator lamp (1a) must go out.
If there are problems:

Determine and rectify cause, subject to separate repair order.
 
CLEANING Clean     
6 Remove cover (2a) of ball head and clean ball head IMPORTANT Do not use any high pressure or steam cleaning equipment nor any solvent or cleaning agent.
IMPORTANT Clean ball head using water and a brush, then dry off with a lint-free rag.
IMPORTANT Remove corrosion from ball head using wire brush.
 
MEASURING Measure     
7 Measure diameter of ball head Minimum diameter of ball head
If diameter of ball head is less than minimum diameter:

Install new ball neck (2), subject to a separate repair order.

8 Lightly grease ball head MB multipurpose grease *BR00.45-Z-1034-06A 
9 Attach cover (2a) to ball head    
10 Check trailer socket (X58), unlocking line (3) and swinging mechanism (4) IMPORTANT Check the trailer socket (X58) for damage, and the unlocking line (3) and swinging mechanism (4) for leaks.
If damage or leaks are present:

Replace damaged or leaky parts, subject to separate repair order.
 
11.1 Pull left lower release switch on liftgate MODEL 166
IMPORTANT Ball neck (2) disengages and swings downward.
 
11.2 Turn unlocking wheel (1) approx 90° counterclockwise MODEL 207, 212, 218.9
IMPORTANT Ball neck (2) disengages and swings downward.
 
12 Swing ball neck (2) behind the bumper IMPORTANT Ball neck (2) must engage and lock behind the bumper, the indicator lamp (1a) must go out.  
13 Switch on ignition and check display in multifunction display IMPORTANT When the ball neck (2) is engaged no error message must appear in the multifunction display.
