Check gear capacity - AR00.10-P-1010A

    IMPORTANT General information:
Observe chassis dynamometer's performance limit.
Vehicles with all-wheel drive can only be checked on a 4-chassis dynamometer.
 
1 Check fault memory and repair faults, if necessary IMPORTANT Vehicles can only be checked in faultless condition.  
2 Check coolant level IMPORTANT Check for signs of leaks.  
3 Check external condition and oil level of engine, transmission and driven axle(s) IMPORTANT Check for leaks and for noise when the engine is running.  
4 Check engine oil change interval IMPORTANT The engine oil change interval must not be exceeded. An engine oil and filter change must otherwise be carried out subject to a special charge.
IMPORTANT On vehicles fitted with maintenance interval display it is only necessary to change the engine oil if this is indicated.
 
5 Check fuel tank level    
6 Mount test wheels onto driven axle(s) IMPORTANT To protect the vehicle tires, test wheels (not winter wheels) must be mounted.  
7 Set tire pressure of test wheels to specified pressure    
8 Remove heat sensitive and heavy objects from the luggage compartment    
9 Anchor the vehicle IMPORTANT With powerful vehicles (> 200 kW), increase the axle load by at least 100 kg, e.g. with sandbags, for axle measurement.
IMPORTANT The anchoring must be taut but not pull the vehicle down.
IMPORTANT Observe operator's manual for anchorage equipment.
IMPORTANT Anchorage equipment such as, e.g. tensioning straps, chains or pull-down devices are available as accessories from the manufacturer of the chassis dynamometer.
 
10 Switch off ignition    
11 Open engine hood NOTES There is a risk of falsification of the measuring results caused by insufficient cooling and ventilation.
IMPORTANT Observe 30 to 40 °C intake air temperature and max. 120 °C oil temperature.
 
12 Connect test connections on chassis dynamometer to vehicle IMPORTANT Observe chassis dynamometer's operator's manual.
On-board diagnosis (OBD) test procedure is to be used on vehicles as of model year 2000.
 
13 Adjust settings on chassis dynamometer IMPORTANT Observe chassis dynamometer's operator's manual.
IMPORTANT Rotating masses are to be taken into account:
up to 17" wheels 60 kg
17 to 18" wheels 70 kg
18 to 22" wheels 80 kg
 
14 Enter vehicle data into chassis dynamometer IMPORTANT Use guideline values from the owner's manual, passenger car sales pocket book or registration certificate. There is no direct relationship to the flywheel mass output values.
IMPORTANT It may be that the rated output is not reached during the test, this is because control mechanisms run in the background to protect the engine and drive train. To this end, a reference vehicle must be used to determine the guideline values.
NOTES Observe chassis dynamometer's operator's manual.
 
15 Direct air flow of cooler blower to radiator and vehicle underside (oil pan, transmission, axles, exhaust, catalytic converter and tires) NOTES To avoid engine damage, make sure that the engine does not overheat.
IMPORTANT Keep the cooler blower (minimum output 15, 000 m3 /h) approx. 1 meter from the vehicle.
IMPORTANT Observe cooler blower's operator's manual.
 
16 Mount extractor funnel IMPORTANT Observe extractor funnel's operator's manual.
NOTES Maintain minimum distance, otherwise damage to the rear apron may occur.
 
17 Deactivate vehicle dynamics systems (with intervention options in engine management) IMPORTANT Observe the setting of the "Workshop level function" in the instrument cluster.
IMPORTANT Dynamic systems can be deactivated, e.g.
  • By activating a check mode
  • With non-networked systems by disconnecting the connector at the hydraulic unit

IMPORTANT Despite these measures it may be that the rated output is not reached; this is because additional control mechanisms run in the background to protect the engine and drive train.
 
18 Start exhaust gas extraction IMPORTANT Observe operator's manual for exhaust gas extraction.  
19 Start engine    
20 Warm up engine, transmission, drive axle(s) and tires under partial load (selector lever position "S" or 3rd gear) at approx. 25 kW IMPORTANT In the event of complaints in the starting or warm-up phase, do not bring the engine up to operating temperature, but proceed in a complaint-related manner.
IMPORTANT Keep engine oil temperature between 60 °C and 80 °C (not 100 °C).
 
21 Switch off accessory IMPORTANT Switched on accessories (e.g. electric steering) lead to a falsification of the measurement results.  
22 Check gear capacity IMPORTANT Full-throttle tests are to be performed directly after the engine has been warmed up, when the temperature of the tires is still low, because temperature rises fastest during these tests.
IMPORTANT Adhere to the user guidance for the chassis dynamometer.
IMPORTANT Only carry out the test for as long as is required to read off the instrument clusters and store the data.
IMPORTANT Observe coolant and engine oil temperature (max. 120 °C).
IMPORTANT Engine output will decrease as the intake air temperature increases. For powerful engines, this decrease may be up to 20 kW. Maintain intake air temperature (30 to 40 °C) via OBD interface. Correction factor only occurs via the OBD interface.
NOTES Do not exceed engine oil temperature of 130 °C as this can lead to engine damage.
NOTES On vehicles fitted with catalytic converters, the test must be stopped immediately if combustion problems occur, otherwise damage to the catalytic converter cannot be ruled out.
 
23 Print out measured values, store and evaluate IMPORTANT Compare and evaluate the actual values with the specified guideline values in the operator's manual, passenger car sales pocket book or registration document or against the measured values of a reference vehicle.
IMPORTANT The specified statements of power output in the registration document are determined in accordance with the EU guidelines and should not be directly compared with the measurement result.
IMPORTANT Two retests are permitted after adjustment operations. Before any further testing can be done, a break (45 minutes) must be taken to allow the components to cool down.
 
24 Switch off ignition    
25 Switch off exhaust gas extraction IMPORTANT Observe operator's manual for exhaust gas extraction.  
26 Activate vehicle dynamics systems (with intervention options in engine management) IMPORTANT Dynamic systems can be activated, e.g.
  • By deactivating a check mode, terminal 15
  • By connecting the connector at the hydraulic unit
 
27 Remove extraction funnel IMPORTANT Observe extractor funnel's operator's manual.  
28 Detach chassis dynamometer's test connections from vehicle    
29 Close engine hood    
30 Remove vehicle anchorage IMPORTANT Observe operator's manual for anchorage equipment.  
31 Mount vehicle wheels onto vehicle    
32 Check fault memory and repair faults, if necessary
