The radio is located in the center console.

Central operating unit and display unit for entertainment and communications systems integrated into vehicle 

The radio provides the user with a structured and uniform user interface that is displayed on the Audio/COMAND display (A40/8).

Reading in the controls and input signals 

The input factors are read in via the following connections:

• Direct line 
• CAN 
• Media Oriented System Transport (MOST) (with CODE 510 (Audio 20 with CD changer)) 

Direct line 

The radio is equipped with the following direct connections:

• Circuit 30g
• Circuit 31
• Wake-up for MOST (bi-directional)
• Hands-free system microphone (A67b1)
• FM 1, AM, CL [ZV] and KEYLESS-GO antenna amplifier (A2/18)
• FM 2 and DAB (A2/19) antenna amplifier
• Bluetooth antenna (A2/91) (as of 01.06.2012 also for Bluetooth® audio)
• AUX connection electrical connector (X39/45) up to 28.02.2013 for external audio equipment, up to 31.05.2011 in the glove compartment, as of 01.06.2011 in the stowage compartment (telephone compartment) under the armrest (except CODE 518 (Media Interface))
• USB electrical connector (X115) (as of 01.06.2012)
• Cradle for navigation module (A2/30-1) (with CODE 508 (Navigation box preinstallation) or with CODE 509 (Navigation box))

CAN 

The radio is a subscriber of the interior CAN (CAN B) and the telematics CAN (CAN A).

Media Oriented System Transport (MOST) (with CODE 510 (Audio 20 with CD changer)) 

Control and audio signals from the following control units:

• Sound system amplifier control unit (N40/3) (with CODE 810 (Sound system))
• Digital Audio Broadcasting control unit (N87/3) (with CODE 537 (Digital radio))
• Media interface control unit (N125/1) (with CODE 518 (Media interface))

Evaluation of input factors 

The input values are processed in the radio.

Activation of output media and system components 

The following direct output signals are possible:

• Audio output (speaker system) (except CODE 810 (Sound system))
• Switching voltage for telephony to Bluetooth module (A34/7) (up to 28.02.2013) (with CODE 386 (Comfort telephone)) or to the mobile phone contact plate (X237/1) (as of 01.03.2013) (with CODE 386 (Comfort telephone))
• Power supply for connected USB mass storage device (Universal Serial Bus) to USB electrical connector
• Microphone output to the bracket for navigation module (with CODE 508 (Navigation box preinstallation) or with CODE 509 (Navigation box))
• Bluetooth antenna (A2/91) (as of 01.06.2012 also for Bluetooth® audio)

Function 

The buttons of the button groups on the radio are read in and provided to the central computer. The button operations undergo further processing in the central computer and are forwarded via MOST (with CODE 510 (Audio 20 with CD changer)), telematics CAN or interior CAN to the other system components in the form of messages. If the "ON" button on the radio is pressed, the radio switches on. The volume is regulated by turning the "ON" button. The left button group can be used to activate the audio source requested by the user.

CD drive 

The integrated CD drive can be used to play audio CDs (including in MP3 format).
