Limp-home mode, general
In order to guarantee a safe driving condition and to avoid damage to the transmission, the fully integrated transmission control unit (Y3/8n4) switches to limp-home mode in the event of critical faults.
The malfunction is stored with the associated fault code in the fault memory and communicated to the CDI control unit (N3/9) or the ME-SFI [ME] control unit (N3/10) via the drivetrain CAN (CAN C). The CDI control unit or the ME-SFI [ME] control unit routes the fault signal over the chassis CAN (CAN E) to the instrument cluster (A1), which then activates the engine diagnosis indicator lamp (A1e58).
As of model refinement 13, the existing chassis CAN will be replaced by chassis CAN 1 (CAN E1). An additional chassis CAN 2 (CAN E2) is used between the instrument cluster and the front SAM control unit with fuse and relay module (N10/1). The ME-SFI [ME] control unit or the CDI control unit is the interface between the drivetrain CAN and chassis CAN 1. The interface between chassis CAN 1 and chassis CAN 2 is formed by the front SAM control unit with fuse and relay module.
If the fully integrated transmission control unit switches to limp-home mode, the substitute strategy maintains vehicle availability. Those gears, for which the affected control solenoid valve/actuator should be actuated, are locked.
In the event of complete failure of the fully integrated transmission control unit, the control solenoid valves are not energized so the transmission is powerless and there is no torque transmission.
Diagnosis
Up to 16 faults can be stored simultaneously in the fault memory. These can be read out using Xentry diagnostics.
If the hydraulics malfunction in the fully integrated transmission control controller unit (Y3/8), the "Charging when stationary" function is deactivated and the electrical ancillary equipment is operated with reduced power.
