As of model year 11/AEJ 10, the labeling on the automatic transmission mode button (S16/12) and the display in the instrument cluster will be changed from Comfort ("C") transmission mode to Economy ("E") transmission mode.

It shows the driver the currently engaged gear "", "1", "2", "3", "4", "5", "6" or selector lever position "P", "R", "N", "P".

It shows the driver mode selected using the A/T transmission mode button, Sport "S", Comfort "C" or Economy "E" or Manual "M" with code 950 (Sport package) except code 494 (USA version).
The data are routed over the drive train CAN (CAN C) from the fully integrated transmission control unit (Y3/8n4) and from the intelligent servo module for DIRECT SELECT (A80).
As of model refinement 13, a gearshift recommendation is also shown in the instrument cluster. This is part of the short-term M mode that is also integrated.
The DIRECT SELECT lever (S16/13) can be used to select 4 different functions, the A/T transmission mode button 3 different transmission modes with code 950 (Sport package).
Transmission mode "M" is only available with code 950 (Sport package). In vehicles without the sport package, transmission mode "M" is not available. In these vehicles, transmission mode "M" is replaced by the "short term mode M".

Upshifting and downshifting
Upshifting and downshifting is performed using the steering wheel upshift button (S111/1) and steering wheel downshift button (S110/1) with code (428) Steering wheel shift paddles.
Upshifting and downshifting by the selector lever takes place via the following options:
- Touch "+", upshift by one gear one at a time. The shift range is extended simultaneously in the transmission modes "C" / "E" and "S" (press and hold down, direct change to gear range "D").
- Touch "-", downshift by one gear at a time. The shift range is limited simultaneously in the transmission modes "C" / "E" and "S" (press and hold down, a shift range is selected in which optimum acceleration or deceleration of the vehicle is possible).
With a limited shift range, upshifts take place close to the maximum engine speed limitation.
The gear limitation is replaced by the function "Short-term M mode". The short-term M program is a temporary program that is activated when the steering wheel gearshift buttons or the DIRECT SELECT lever are operated. Pressing in the positive (+) direction triggers an upshift and pressing in the negative (-) direction triggers a downshift, insofar as this is permissible. If not, the current gear is maintained.
After a specified time window, this function deactivates again automatically. The activated time can be extended by a minimum speed being dropped below (e.g. stopping), where lateral acceleration is detected by the yaw rate sensor for lateral and longitudinal acceleration (B24/15) or if the vehicle is in a deceleration phase. If none of the stated criteria are active anymore, the M mode remains active for a prescribed remaining time. After this remaining time expires, the initial shift mode is returned to.
The driver can prematurely cancel the short-term mode M through specific actions, e.g. if he/she operates and holds the upshift steering wheel gearshift button or the DIRECT SELECT lever (S16/13) in the "positive" (+) direction, changes the gear range or changes the transmission mode. If one of these preconditions is met, a switch is made back to the initial shift program.

A/T transmission mode button
The following transmission modes can be selected:
- Comfort ("C") / Economy ("E") transmission mode (start-off in 2nd gear except in 1st gear shift range; gear changes are performed at lower engine speeds)
- Transmission mode Sport "S" (start off in 1st gear for all driving situations)
- Manual "M" transmission mode with code 950 (Sport package) except code 494 (USA version) Direct gear selection using selector lever or steering wheel downshift button and steering wheel upshift button
With kickdown the upshifts and downshifts take place as in transmission mode "S".
