Location
On vehicles with CODE 224 (Design individual rear seat system), the DVD player is located in the center armrest of the individual rear seat system.
On vehicles except CODE 224 (Design individual rear seat system), the DVD player is freely accessible in the center of the rear bench seat above the propeller shaft tunnel.
Tasks
The DVD player is the main control unit for the Rear Seat Entertainment system and has the following tasks:
- Use of all audio or video sources installed on and in the DVD player
- Power and resource management
- Receive signals
- Decoding of signals
- Transmitting signals
Use of all audio or video sources installed on and in DVD player
Usage also includes connection detection (recognition) as well as management of the audio and video sources. The following audio or video sources are available:
- Integrated DVD drive: Audio CD or DVD, video DVD, MP3-CD or DVD
- "AUX": Connected portable devices, e.g. portable DVD players, video cameras, MP3 players, or game consoles
- "COMAND": Media sources of the COMAND controller unit (A40/3), with CODE 512 (COMAND APS with DVD changer), CODE 526 (COMAND with single DVD drive (without navigation)), CODE 527 (COMAND APS with single DVD drive (with navigation)), CODE 528 (COMAND incl. DVD changer) or CODE 531 (COMAND APS))
Media sources connected via "AUX" must always be selected manually.
Under "COMAND", the Rear Seat Entertainment system is provided with a media source managed by the COMAND controller unit that was enabled at the unit via the "Active source to rear" selection for the Rear Seat Entertainment system. The media source can be deactivated at the COMAND controller unit by selecting "Rear off" for the Rear Seat Entertainment system. The "Bluetooth ® audio" media source of the COMAND controller unit cannot be enabled for the Rear Seat Entertainment system.

- Analog audio signals from the COMAND controller unit (with CODE 512 (COMAND APS with DVD changer), with CODE 527 (COMAND APS with single DVD drive (with navigation)) or with CODE 531 (COMAND APS))
- Analog video and audio signals from the audio or video sources connected to AUX jack
- Digital picture and audio signals from the audio CD or DVD, video DVD, MP3-CD or MP3-DVD inserted in the DVD drive

The DVD player is a subscriber of the telematics CAN (CAN A) and communicates with the following components:
- Audio unit
- Left rear display (A40/5)
- Right rear display (A40/6)
Decoding of signals
The DVD player decodes the analog or digital audio and picture signals from the available audio or video sources into analog audio and picture signals.

Body
The following components are integrated in the DVD player:
- DVD drive
- 2 audio connections (AUX) (white and red)
- 1 video connection (AUX) (yellow)
The DVD drive of the DVD player is a single slot drive. In addition to DVD Video and audio media, CD audio media and MP3 files can also be played. Media protected by popular copy protection systems and recorded blanks can likewise be played. The DVD drive has a "DVD Disk Auto Detect" function.
