REMOVINGINSTALLING Remove/install
DANGER Risk of death  caused by vehicle slipping or toppling off of the lifting platform. Align vehicle between vehicle lift columns and position the four support plates at the vehicle lift support points specified by vehicle manufacturer. AS00.00-Z-0010-01A
DANGER Risk of injury  to skin or eyes from hydraulic fluid spraying out under pressure. Risk of poisoning  from swallowing hydraulic fluid. Depressurize hydraulic system completely before starting any work on it. Wear protective clothing and safety glasses. AS00.00-Z-0013-01A
1 Raise vehicle using vehicle lift until the wheels are clear of the ground
2 Open engine hood   AR88.40-P-1000EW
IMPORTANT MODEL 212
with CODE U60 (Pedestrian protection)
Close engine hood:
The clamping lever must be fitted and locked.
3.1 Remove left engine intake air duct (1) ENGINE 272, 273
3.2 Remove upper engine cover ENGINE 642, 651
INSTALLATION IMPORTANT Ignition switched off.

3.3 Remove front engine cover ENGINE 156
NOTES Do not tilt front engine cover, but lift it off vertically toward top.
Otherwise the retaining lugs may break off.

4 Remove cap (2d) from expansion reservoir (2)
  Filling
5 Fill expansion reservoir (2) with MB steering gear oil NOTES Do not  start the engine!
Otherwise, there is a risk of air entering the hydraulic steering system, which is then extremely difficult to remove.
IMPORTANT Fill the expansion reservoir (2) to approx. 10 mm below the upper edge of the reservoir with MB steering gear oil.
IMPORTANT Refill with MB-steering gear oil continuously until the oil level remains constant.

FLUID SPECIFICATION Power steering *BF46.20-P-1001-01E
  Bleeding
6 Turn steering wheel from steering stop to steering stop NOTES Do not  start the engine!
Otherwise, there is a risk of air entering the hydraulic steering system, which is then extremely difficult to remove.
IMPORTANT Turn steering wheel slowly from steering stop to steering stop until bubbles are no longer visible in the expansion reservoir (2).
IMPORTANT Repeat turning the steering from stop to stop several times (up to 30 times). During this process, MB steering gear oil must be poured into the expansion reservoir (2) by a second person.

DANGER Risk of accident  from vehicle starting off by itself when engine running. Risk of injury  (bruises and burns) resulting from working on the engine while it is being started or when it is running. Secure vehicle to prevent it from starting off by itself. Wear closed and snug-fitting work clothes. Do not touch hot or rotating parts. AS00.00-Z-0005-01A
7 Start engine without moving the steering IMPORTANT Allow engine to run for Approx.. 1 min. at idle speed.
IMPORTANT During this process, a second person must observe the oil level in the expansion reservoir (2) and add MB steering gear oil if necessary.
8 Turn steering wheel from steering stop to steering stop IMPORTANT When the engine is running turn the steering wheel slowly several times from steering stop to steering stop, meanwhile adding MB steering gear oil in expansion reservoir (2).
IMPORTANT Repeat the procedure until the oil level in the expansion reservoir (2) remains constant and bubbles are no longer visible.

INSPECT Check
9 Check oil level in the expansion reservoir (2) and fill up to the maximum fill level
REFER TO MAINTENANCE MODEL 212 except CODE 211 (Direct steering)
IMPORTANT The oil level in the expansion reservoir (2) must always be filled up to the maximum.
