Install and weld in B-pillar - AR63.20-P-1350-06EW

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 33 other vehicles, including the 2016 Mercedes-Benz E63 S AMG, 2016 Mercedes-Benz E400, 2016 Mercedes-Benz E350, 2016 Mercedes-Benz E300, and 2016 Mercedes-Benz E250.   1. Set up side portal frame.

    IMPORTANT Observe setup plans.

  2. Install inner B-pillar (2) and side longitudinal member (3), fit and fix in place with portal bracket.

    IMPORTANT Use spacer panel from portal straightening set on inner B-pillar (2). See setup plans.

  3. Drill Ø 6.7 mm rivet holes in inner B-pillar (2) with BTR-Usibor drill bit (areas A and B).

    IMPORTANT Rivet holes in area B are only required when installing inner B-pillar (2) without side longitudinal member (3).

  4. Countersink rivet holes on inner B-pillar (2) (arrows).

    Only when installing inner B-pillar (2) without side longitudinal member (3).

  5. IMPORTANT The following operation steps 5, 6, 7 and 8 are only performed when installing the inner B-pillar without side longitudinal member.

  6. Scribe rivet holes on inner B-pillar (areas B1 and B2 ).
  7. Center punch rivet holes on inner B-pillar (areas B1 and B2 ).
  8. Drill Ø 6.7 mm rivet holes in inner B-pillar with BTR-Usibor drill bit (areas B1 and B2 ).
  9. Countersink rivet holes on inner B-pillar (areas B1 and B2 ).
  10. Remove portal bracket, inner B-pillar and side longitudinal member.

    IMPORTANT When installing inner B-pillar without longitudinal member, remove only inner B-pillar.

  11. Deburr rivet holes on both sides.

  13. Apply 2-component adhesive in cross-hatched areas.

    IMPORTANT When installing inner B-pillar with side longitudinal member, additionally apply 2-component adhesive in area B3 .

    IMPORTANT Observe pretreatment of bonding surfaces. Refer to the manufacturer's information for the curing and working times of 2-component adhesive.

  15. Install inner B-pillar (2) with side longitudinal member, fit and fix in place with portal bracket.

    IMPORTANT Use spacer panel from portal straightening set on inner B-pillar (2). See setup plans.

  16. Rivet inner B-pillar (2) with Ø 6.5 X 12.5 steel/steel blind rivets (area H).
  17. Rivet inner B-pillar (2) with Ø 6.4 X 14 Polygrip countersunk-head rivets (areas I and J).
  18. Only when installing inner B-pillar (2) without side longitudinal member.

  19. Rivet inner B-pillar (2) with Ø 6.4 X 14.5 steel/steel bind rivet (area K).
  20. Only when installing inner B-pillar (2) without side longitudinal member.

  21. Remove portal bracket.

  23. Inner B-pillar (2) with side longitudinal member (3) POLARIZATION RESISTANCE SINGLE-ROW SPOT WELD (areas C, C1 , G, G1 and E).

    NOTES The new resistance must be positioned at exactly the same position as the previous resistance spot welds, because the area below was glued previously (areas C1 and G1 ).

    Otherwise the required minimum strength of the weld joint is not ensured.

    IMPORTANT Resistance spot weld areas C, G and E only when installing inner B-pillar (2) with side longitudinal member (3).

  24. Inner B-pillar (2) with side longitudinal member (3) SG «««« (areas D and F).

    Insert gas weld only when installing inner B-pillar (2) with side longitudinal member (3) (areas D and F).

  26. Install outer B-pillar (1), fit and fix in place with portal bracket.
  27. Drill rivet holes on outer B-pillar (1) (area O).
  28. Remove portal bracket and outer B-pillar (1).
  29. Deburr rivet holes on outer B-pillar (1) on both sides.

  31. Apply 2-component adhesive in cross-hatched areas.

    IMPORTANT Observe pretreatment of bonding surfaces. Refer to the manufacturer's information for the curing and working times of 2-component adhesive.

  32. Install outer B-pillar (1), fit and fix in place with portal bracket.
  33. Rivet outer B-pillar (1) with Ø 6.4 X 14 Polygrip countersunk-head rivets (area O).
  34. Outer B-pillar (1) POLARIZATION RESISTANCE SINGLE-ROW SPOT WELD (areas M, M1 , N and N1 ).

    NOTES The new resistance B must be positioned at exactly the same position as the previous resistance spot welds, because the area was glued previously (areas M1 and N1 ). Otherwise the required minimum strength of the weld joint is not ensured.

  36. Remove portal bracket.
  37. Outer B-pillar (1) SG «««« (areas P, Q and R).

    IMPORTANT Perform inert gas welding in intervals, allow to cool down in between to reduce heat distortion.

  38. Grind insert gas welds on outer B-pillar (1) down flat.
  39. Clean weld joints.
  40. Solder surface on outer B-pillar (1) in areas P, Q and R with body solder and smooth.
  41. Remove grinding and drilling chips with wet/dry vacuum cleaner.
  42. Foam area of previously removed foam part (arrow) with filler foam.

    IMPORTANT Use hole for upper trim strip.
