INSPECT Checking
DANGER Risk of death  caused by vehicle slipping or toppling off of the lifting platform. Align vehicle between columns of vehicle lift and position four support plates at vehicle lift support points specified by vehicle manufacturer. AS00.00-Z-0010-01A
DANGER Risk of explosion  caused by fuel igniting, risk of poisoning caused by inhaling and swallowing fuel and risk of injury to eyes and skin caused by contact with fuel No fire, sparks, open flames or smoking.
Pour fuels only into suitable and appropriately marked containers.
Wear protective clothing when handling fuel.
AS47.00-Z-0001-01A
IMPORTANT Preconditions for leak test are cleanliness, accessibility and thoroughness Cleanliness:
  • Remove fuel remains outside the fuel system.
  • Allow vehicle to flash off.

Accessibility:
  • The best possible solution is to remove service flaps and covers.

Thoroughness:
  • Carry out the test systematically and calmly
  • For positive measurements: Clean position and repeat test.

1 Close purging switchover valve (Y58/1), to do this use STAR DIAGNOSIS Menu guidance:
  • Engine control module
  • Adaptations
  • Fuel tank leak test

2 Detach purge line (C) at purging switchover valve (Y58/1)
3 Disconnect vacuum tester from purge line (C) SPECIAL TOOL Fig 3
4 Apply pressure to fuel system with overpressure Readjust until overpressure remains stable.
Overpressure value:
70 mbar  or 1.0 psi

5 Sniff fuel system at constant overpressure or check for substance concentration due to escaping gas Concentration value: Maximum 5 ppm
(ppm → parts per million)
Repeat test when the limit value of 5 ppm is exceeded.

7 Fasten purge line (C) to purging switchover valve (Y58/1) IMPORTANT Replace hose clamp.
8 Open purging switchover valve (Y58/1), to do this use STAR DIAGNOSIS Menu guidance:
  • Engine control module
  • Adaptations
  • Fuel tank leak test

DANGER Risk of accident  caused by vehicle starting off by itself when engine is running. Risk of injury  caused by contusions and burns during starting procedure or when working near the engine as it is running Secure vehicle to prevent it from moving by itself.
Wear closed and snug-fitting work clothes. Do not touch hot or rotating parts.
