Potential risks
Risk of explosion
Enriched sanding/grinding dust can lead to dust explosions in the presence of ignition sources. Sanding/grinding dust can be electrostatically charged when evacuated with air extraction systems and pose an ignition hazard.
Risk of injury
When performing certain types of work on carbon fiber reinforced plastics such as cutting, grinding, etc., carbon fiber dust containing fine, short fibers is produced. This dust or fibers irritate the bronchial tubes and may cause damage to the lungs. Fibers that settle in the lungs may lead to lung damage .
Skin irritation
The sharp fibers of the carbon fiber dust cause tiny injuries when they penetrate into the surface of the skin which can lead to skin irritations - particularly in combination with dirt.
Safety precautions/instructions
- Always wear fine dust filter mask, safety glasses and protective gloves when working with CRP materials.
- Avoid stirring up dust that is formed and immediately extract all dust caused by grinding work with an approved vacuum cleaner while working on CRP materials.
- The air extraction systems must be grounded to prevent a dust explosion.
- Only use tools that have a connection for extractor units.
- Wipe off remaining dust residues with a moist, lint-free rag.
First-aid measures
Contact with eyes
- Immediately rinse eyes thoroughly with running, lukewarm water and contact an eye doctor.
Contact with skin
- Immediately wash affected skin areas with warm water and soap.
Respiratory paths
- Move to fresh air. Contact physician.
