Risk of injury
Danger from pyrotechnical engine hood lifters or parts flying around after uncontrolled ignition of pyrotechnical engine hood lifters or if not stored on their side coupled with an insufficient safe distance of the lifting piston to other objects or surfaces (e.g. wall). A hazard is also presented when disposing of pyrotechnical engine hood lifters through controlled deployment if an insufficient safe distance is maintained or when opening with cutting torches or other cutting tools, or due to smelting or if parts that have not yet been triggered end up in a blaze or a smoldering fire at landfills.
Safety instructions/precautions
- Always place removed pyrotechnical engine hood lifters on their side on a level surface. Maintain an all-round safe distance from other objects or surfaces (e.g. wall) of at least 50 cm.
- The procurement, transport, storage, testing and installation must be performed by specially trained personnel. The valid country-specific regulations in each case must be observed.
- Mount pyrotechnical engine hood lifters immediately after removing from storage area.
- Pyrotechnical engine hood lifters must be protected against sparks, open flames and temperatures > 100 °C.
- Do not transport pyrotechnical engine hood lifters in the passenger compartment, but rather stow them securely in the load compartment of the vehicle in their original packaging and such that they cannot slip around.
- Do not allow pyrotechnical engine hood lifters to come into contact with grease, oil or cleaning agents.
- Perform system tests using approved test equipment only when installed.
- Pyrotechnical engine hood lifters that have been dropped must always be replaced.
- Pyrotechnical engine hood lifters that are no longer required or which are defective must be disposed of in line with the appropriate country-specific regulations in a professional and environmentally safe manner.
Before starting bodywork or retrofits, work on pyrotechnical engine hood lifters and work on components that are connected to pyrotechnical engine hood lifters or necessitate an intervention in their electric circuit:
- Disconnect and insulate ground line of battery, note second or backup battery.
- Disconnect any external power sources (e.g. charger).
- Disconnect plug connection from control unit during work in the passenger compartment and during welding.
