Potential risks
- Risk of fire and explosion caused by machining/treating magnesium components.
- In addition to this, when mechanically processing with coolant lubricants mixed with water, there is also the danger of hydrogen being produced causing an additional risk of explosion (oxyhydrogen gas).
- Magnesium chips or dust mixed with oxygen have a tendency to burn or explode.

Safety precautions/instructions
- During machining/treating work do not smoke; stay away from ignition sources and open flames.
- Store and transport magnesium chips only in dry, tightly sealed containers.
These containers must be stored in a cool place.
Fire protective measures and suitable fire extinguishing agents are:
- Fire class D extinguishers (with powder nozzle), dry extinguishing blankets or dry sand.
Under no circumstances:
Use fire extinguishers of fire class A, B, C, water, carbon dioxide (CO 2
) or nitrogen.
