Processing specification for 2-component structural foam adhesive for body repairs

This specification contains the necessary information for the process consistent application of 2-component structural foam adhesive for reinforcements. It governs the quality of the bonded connection while also ensuring smooth use of the bonding system in a repair instance. This specifications applies solely for 2-component structural foam adhesive for reinforcements.

Work preparation

To comply with the specified maximum processing and joining times all components must be perfectly prepared beforehand so that the joining process can commence immediately after the surface treatment and adhesive application. To this end, all necessary tooling and materials must be available.

Careful preparation of the bonding surfaces is required to ensure proper connection between the adhesive and the surfaces of the parts to be joined. The individual steps are specified below:

Pretreatment of bonding surfaces on vehicle

The reinforcements to be replaced and old adhesive residue must have been completely removed. Clean the bonding surface using cleaner and lint-free cloth. The bonding surface must be completely dry before applying the 2-component structural foam adhesive (allow cleaner to evaporate without any residue).

Pretreatment of bonding surfaces on new part

Clean the bonding surface using cleaner and lint-free cloth. The bonding surface must be completely dry before applying the 2-component structural foam adhesive (allow cleaner to evaporate without any residue). The reinforcements to be replaced must be installed immediately to avoid any soiling of the bonding surface. The adhesive must be applied at the latest 15 minutes after finishing the cleaning process.

Prepare adhesive application

Before mounting the mixing tube onto the cartridge leveling must have been performed. To do so, press out some adhesive until both components each exit from the opening. Then mount the mixing tube. To ensure that the components are uniformly mixed, a quantity of adhesive amounting to the length of two measuring tubes must first be pressed out and discarded. An additional quantity of adhesive amounting to the length of a measuring tube is then made up as the reference adhesive bead and it is used to check/confirm the adhesive hardening process.

Mixing tube/static mixer idle time

In the event of an extended user break (>15 minutes) with the adhesive gun, the static mixing tube must be rinsed through in the meantime to ensure that hardened adhesive does not clog up the nozzle. If the hardening process has advanced so far that the adhesive can no longer be pressed out of the mixing tube, then it has to be replaced.

Glue in and join new part

Apply adhesive to cleaned bonding surfaces. The applied adhesive must exhibit a thickness/height of at least 10-15 mm and be spread uniformly across the bonding surfaces.

The joining process in a repair instance must take place immediately after application of the adhesive to ensure that proper and reliable bonding is practiced. It must be completed after another 30 minutes. Otherwise the adhesive bead must be removed and the adhesive application process must be repeated. The above-described times and temperatures must always be maintained here.

Waste receptacle/disposal

Labor protection

Gloves, protective mouth masks, protective glasses, air extraction system.

Miscellaneous

The vehicle may not be moved to the next workbay until at least 36 hours have elapsed.

The period from joining the repaired components up to hand over of the vehicle to the customer must be at least 48 hours.
