DTC B1660/43: Passenger Airbag ON/OFF Indicator Circuit Malfunction: Procedure

  1. CHECK TELLTALE LIGHT ASSEMBLY (FRONT PASSENGER AIRBAG ON/OFF INDICATOR CONDITION) 
    1. Turn the power switch on (IG).
    2. Check the front passenger airbag ON/OFF indicator operation.

      HINT: 

      Refer to the normal condition of the front passenger airbag ON/OFF indicator. Refer to ELECTRONIC CIRCUIT INSPECTION PROCEDURE .

    3. Turn the power switch off.
    4. Disconnect the cable from the negative (-) auxiliary battery terminal.
      WARNING:

      Wait at least 90 seconds after disconnecting the cable from the negative (-) auxiliary battery terminal to disable the SRS system.

      RESULT

      Result Proceed to
      Always ON A
      OFF B

    B → See step   10 

    A: Go to next step 

  2. CHECK CONNECTION OF CONNECTORS 
    1. Check that the connectors are properly connected to the airbag ECU assembly and the telltale light assembly.

      OK

      The connectors are properly connected.

    NG → CONNECT CONNECTORS PROPERLY 

    OK: Go to next step 

  3. CHECK CONNECTORS 
    1. Disconnect the connectors from the airbag ECU assembly and telltale light assembly.
    2. Check that the connectors (on the airbag ECU assembly side and telltale light assembly side) are not damaged.

      OK

      The connectors are not deformed or damaged.

    NG → REPLACE INSTRUMENT PANEL WIRE 

    OK: Go to next step 

  4. CHECK TELLTALE LIGHT ASSEMBLY (FRONT PASSENGER AIRBAG ON/OFF INDICATOR)

    1. Connect the connector to the telltale light assembly.
    2. Connect the negative (-) terminal cable to the auxiliary battery, and wait for at least 2 seconds.
    3. Turn the power switch on (IG).
    4. Check the front passenger airbag ON/OFF indicator operation.

      OK

      The front passenger airbag ON/OFF indicator does not come on.

    5. Turn the power switch off.
    6. Disconnect the cable from the negative (-) auxiliary battery terminal.
      WARNING:

      Wait at least 90 seconds after disconnecting the cable from the negative (-) auxiliary battery terminal to disable the SRS system.

    NG → See step   6 

    OK: Go to next step 

  5. CHECK AIRBAG ECU ASSEMBLY 
    1. Connect the connector to the airbag ECU assembly.
    2. Connect the negative (-) terminal cable to the auxiliary battery, and wait for at least 2 seconds.
    3. Turn the power switch on (IG), and wait for at least 60 seconds.
    4. Clear the DTCs stored in the memory. Refer to DTC CHECK / CLEAR .
    5. Turn the power switch off.
    6. Turn the power switch on (IG), and wait for at least 60 seconds.
    7. Check for DTCs. Refer to DTC CHECK / CLEAR .

      OK

      DTC B1660/43 is not output.

      HINT: 

      DTCs other than B1660/43 may be output at this time, but they are not related to this check.

    NG → See step   19 

    OK → See step   22 

  6. CHECK INSTRUMENT PANEL WIRE (OPEN) 
    1. Turn the power switch off.

    2. Disconnect the cable from the negative (-) auxiliary battery terminal.
      WARNING:

      Wait at least 90 seconds after disconnecting the cable from the negative (-) auxiliary battery terminal to disable the SRS system.

    3. Disconnect the connector from the telltale light assembly.
    4. Using a service wire, connect terminals 23 (PAON) and 17 (P-AB) of connector B.
      NOTE:

      Do not forcibly insert the service wire into the terminals of the connector when connecting the wire.

    5. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Standard Resistance

      Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
      C44-2 (PAON) - C44-1 (P-AB) Always Below 1 Ω

    NG → REPLACE INSTRUMENT PANEL WIRE 

    OK: Go to next step 

  7. CHECK INSTRUMENT PANEL WIRE (SHORT) 
    1. Disconnect the service wire from connector B.

    2. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Standard Resistance

      Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
      C44-2 (PAON) - C44-1 (P-AB) Always 1 MΩ or higher
      TEXT IN ILLUSTRATION

      *2 Airbag ECU Assembly
      *a Front view of wire harness connector

    NG → REPLACE INSTRUMENT PANEL WIRE 

    OK: Go to next step 

  8. CHECK INSTRUMENT PANEL WIRE (SHORT TO B+) 
    1. Connect the cable to the negative (-) auxiliary battery terminal.

    2. Turn the power switch on (IG).
    3. Measure the voltage according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Standard Voltage

      Tester Connection Switch Condition Specified Condition
      C44-2 (PAON) - Body ground Power switch on (IG) Below 1 V
      C44-1 (P-AB) - Body ground Power switch on (IG) Below 1 V
    4. Turn the power switch off.
    5. Disconnect the cable to the negative (-) auxiliary battery terminal.
      WARNING:

      Wait at least 90 seconds after disconnecting the cable from the negative (-) auxiliary battery terminal to disable the SRS system.

    NG → REPLACE INSTRUMENT PANEL WIRE 

    OK: Go to next step 

  9. CHECK INSTRUMENT PANEL WIRE (SHORT TO GROUND) 
    1. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Standard Resistance

      Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
      C44-2 (PAON) - Body ground Always 1 MΩ or higher
      C44-1 (P-AB) - Body ground Always 1 MΩ or higher

    NG → REPLACE INSTRUMENT PANEL WIRE 

    OK → See step   20 

  10. CHECK CONNECTION OF CONNECTORS 
    1. Check that the connectors are properly connected to the airbag ECU assembly and telltale light assembly.

      OK

      The connectors are properly connected.

    NG → CONNECT CONNECTORS PROPERLY 

    OK: Go to next step 

  11. CHECK CONNECTORS 
    1. Disconnect the connectors from the airbag ECU assembly and telltale light assembly.
    2. Check that the connectors (on the airbag ECU assembly side and telltale light assembly side) are not damaged.

      OK

      The connectors are not deformed or damaged.

    NG → REPLACE INSTRUMENT PANEL WIRE 

    OK: Go to next step 

  12. CHECK INSTRUMENT PANEL WIRE (OPEN) 
    1. Turn the power switch off.

    2. Disconnect the cable from the negative (-) auxiliary battery terminal.
      WARNING:

      Wait at least 90 seconds after disconnecting the cable from the negative (-) auxiliary battery terminal to disable the SRS system.

    3. Disconnect the connector from the telltale light assembly.
    4. Using a service wire, connect terminals 23 (PAON) and 17 (P-AB) of connector B.
      NOTE:

      Do not forcibly insert the service wire into the terminals of the connector when connecting the wire.

    5. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Standard Resistance

      Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
      C44-2 (PAON) - C44-1 (P-AB) Always Below 1 Ω

    NG → REPLACE INSTRUMENT PANEL WIRE 

    OK: Go to next step 

  13. CHECK INSTRUMENT PANEL WIRE (SHORT) 
    1. Disconnect the service wire from connector B.

    2. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Standard Resistance

      Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
      C44-2 (PAON) - C44-1 (P-AB) Always 1 MΩ or higher

      *2 Airbag ECU Assembly

    NG → REPLACE INSTRUMENT PANEL WIRE 

    OK: Go to next step 

  14. CHECK INSTRUMENT PANEL WIRE (SHORT TO B+) 
    1. Connect the cable to the negative (-) auxiliary battery terminal.

    2. Turn the power switch on (IG).
    3. Measure the voltage according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Standard Voltage

      Tester Connection Switch Condition Specified Condition
      C44-2 (PAON) - Body ground Power switch on (IG) Below 1 V
      C44-1 (P-AB) - Body ground Power switch on (IG) Below 1 V
    4. Turn the power switch off.
    5. Disconnect the cable to the negative (-) auxiliary battery terminal.
      WARNING:

      Wait at least 90 seconds after disconnecting the cable from the negative (-) auxiliary battery terminal to disable the SRS system.

    NG → REPLACE INSTRUMENT PANEL WIRE 

    OK: Go to next step 

  15. CHECK INSTRUMENT PANEL WIRE (SHORT TO GROUND) 
    1. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Standard Resistance

      Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
      C44-2 (PAON) - Body ground Always 1 MΩ or higher
      C44-1 (P-AB) - Body ground Always 1 MΩ or higher

    NG → REPLACE INSTRUMENT PANEL WIRE 

    OK: Go to next step 

  16. CHECK TELLTALE LIGHT ASSEMBLY (FRONT PASSENGER AIRBAG ON/OFF INDICATOR SOURCE VOLTAGE)

    1. Connect the connectors to the airbag ECU assembly.
    2. Turn the power switch on (IG).
    3. Measure the voltage according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Standard Voltage

      Tester Connection Switch Condition Specified Condition
      C44-6 (IG+) - Body ground Power switch on (IG) 11 to 14 V
    4. Turn the power switch off.
    5. Disconnect the cable from the negative (-) auxiliary battery terminal.
      WARNING:

      Wait at least 90 seconds after disconnecting the cable from the negative (-) auxiliary battery terminal to disable the SRS system.

    NG → REPLACE HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (TELLTALE LIGHT ASSEMBLY - AUXILIARY BATTERY) 

    OK: Go to next step 

  17. CHECK TELLTALE LIGHT ASSEMBLY (FRONT PASSENGER AIRBAG ON/OFF INDICATOR)

    1. Connect the connector to the telltale light assembly.
    2. Disconnect the connectors from the airbag ECU assembly.
    3. Connect the negative (-) terminal cable to the auxiliary battery, and wait for at least 2 seconds.
    4. Turn the power switch on (IG).
    5. Check the indicator according to the value(s) in the table below.

      OK

      Tester Connection Switch Condition Front Passenger Airbag ON/OFF Indicator
      C27-23 (PAON) - Body ground Power switch on (IG) "ON" comes on
      C27-17 (P-AB) - Body ground Power switch on (IG) "OFF" comes on
    6. Turn the power switch off.
    7. Disconnect the cable from the negative (-) auxiliary battery terminal.
      WARNING:

      Wait at least 90 seconds after disconnecting the cable from the negative (-) auxiliary battery terminal to disable the SRS system.

    NG → See step   23 

    OK: Go to next step 

  18. CHECK AIRBAG ECU ASSEMBLY 
    1. Connect the connectors to the airbag ECU assembly.
    2. Connect the negative (-) terminal cable to the auxiliary battery and wait for at least 2 seconds.
    3. Turn the power switch on (IG), and wait for at least 60 seconds.
    4. Clear the DTCs stored in the memory. Refer to DTC CHECK / CLEAR .
    5. Turn the power switch off.
    6. Turn the power switch on (IG), and wait for at least 60 seconds.
    7. Check for DTCs. Refer to DTC CHECK / CLEAR .

      OK

      DTC B1660/43 is not output.

      HINT: 

      DTCs other than B1660/43 may be output at this time, but they are not related to this check.

    NG → See step   24 

    OK → See step   21 

  19. REPLACE AIRBAG ECU ASSEMBLY. Refer to  REMOVAL 
  20. REPLACE TELLTALE LIGHT ASSEMBLY. Refer to  REMOVAL 
  21. USE SIMULATION METHOD TO CHECK. Refer to  HOW TO PROCEED WITH TROUBLESHOOTING
