DTC P0011: Camshaft Position "A" - Timing Over-Advanced or System Performance (Bank 1); DTC P0012: Camshaft Position "A" - Timing Over-Retarded (Bank 1): Procedure

  1. CHECK FOR ANY OTHER DTCS OUTPUT (IN ADDITION TO DTC P0011 OR P0012) 
    1. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
    2. Turn the ignition switch to ON.
    3. Turn the Techstream on.
    4. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Trouble Codes.
    5. Read the DTCs.
      RESULT

      Result Proceed to
      P0011 or P0012 is output A
      P0011 or P0012 and other DTCs are output B

      HINT: 

      If any DTCs other than P0011 or P0012 are output, troubleshoot those DTCs first.

    B → See step   10 

    A: Go to next step 

  2. PERFORM ACTIVE TEST USING TECHSTREAM (OPERATE CAMSHAFT TIMING OIL CONTROL VALVE) 
    1. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
    2. Start the engine.
    3. Turn the Techstream on.
    4. Warm up the engine.
    5. Turn the A/C on.
    6. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Active Test / Control the VVT Linear (Bank 1).
    7. Check the engine speed while operating the camshaft timing oil control valve using the Techstream.

      OK

      Techstream Operation Specified Condition
      0% Normal engine speed
      100% Engine idles roughly or stalls

      HINT: 

      Refer to "Data List / Active Test" [VVT OCV Duty #1 and VVT Change Angle #1]. Refer to DATA LIST / ACTIVE TEST .

    NG → See step   4 

    OK: Go to next step 

  3. CHECK WHETHER DTC OUTPUT RECURS (DTC P0011 OR P0012) 
    1. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
    2. Turn the ignition switch to ON.
    3. Turn the Techstream on.
    4. Clear the DTCs. Refer to DTC CHECK / CLEAR .
    5. Start the engine and warm it up.
    6. Drive the vehicle in accordance with the driving pattern described in Confirmation Driving Pattern.
    7. Read the output pending DTCs using the Techstream.

      OK

      No pending DTC output.

    NG → See step   4 

    OK → See step   9 

  4. CHECK VALVE TIMING (CHECK FOR LOOSENESS IN TIMING CHAIN AND WHETHER TIMING CHAIN HAS JUMPED TOOTH)

    *1 Timing Mark - -
    1. Remove the cylinder head cover.
    2. Turn the crankshaft pulley and align its groove with the "0" timing mark of the timing chain cover.
    3. Check that the timing marks of the camshaft timing gear and camshaft timing exhaust gear are at the positions shown in the illustration.

      HINT: 

      If the timing marks are not as shown, turn the crankshaft one revolution clockwise.

      OK

      Timing marks on camshaft timing gear and camshaft timing exhaust gear are aligned as shown in the illustration.

    NG → See step   11 

    OK: Go to next step 

  5. INSPECT CAMSHAFT TIMING OIL CONTROL VALVE ASSEMBLY 
    1. Inspect the camshaft timing oil control valve assembly. Refer to INSPECTION .

    NG → See step   12 

    OK: Go to next step 

  6. INSPECT OIL CONTROL VALVE FILTER 
    1. Remove the oil control valve filter. Refer to DISASSEMBLY .
    2. Check that the filter is not clogged.

      OK

      Filter is not clogged.

    NG → CLEAN OR REPLACE OIL CONTROL VALVE FILTER 

    OK: Go to next step 

  7. REPLACE CAMSHAFT TIMING GEAR ASSEMBLY 
    1. Replace the camshaft timing gear assembly. Refer to REMOVAL .

    NEXT: Go to next step 

  8. CHECK WHETHER DTC OUTPUT RECURS 
    1. Perform the Confirmation Driving Pattern.

      OK

      No pending DTC is output and All Readiness is NORMAL.

      HINT: 

      DTC P0011 or P0012 is stored when foreign objects in the engine oil are caught in some parts of the system. These codes will remain stored even if the system returns to normal after a short time. These foreign objects are then captured by the oil filter, thus eliminating the source of the problem.

    NG → See step   13 

    OK → END 

  9. CHECK FOR INTERMITTENT PROBLEMS. Refer to  CHECK FOR INTERMITTENT PROBLEMS 
  10. GO TO DTC CHART. Refer to  DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE CHART 
  11. ADJUST VALVE TIMING. Refer to  REASSEMBLY 
  12. REPLACE CAMSHAFT TIMING OIL CONTROL VALVE ASSEMBLY. Refer to  REMOVAL 
  13. REPLACE ECM. Refer to  REMOVAL
