DTC P0011: Camshaft Position "A" - Timing Over-Advanced or System Performance (Bank 1); DTC P0012: Camshaft Position "A" - Timing Over-Retarded (Bank 1): Procedure
- CHECK ANY OTHER DTCS OUTPUT (IN ADDITION TO DTC P0011 OR P0012)
- Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
- Turn the ignition switch to ON.
- Turn the Techstream ON.
- Select the following menu items: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Trouble Codes.
- Read DTCs.RESULT
Result Proceed to P0011 or P0012 A P0011 or P0012 and other DTCs B HINT:
If any DTCs other than P0011 or P0012 are output, troubleshoot those DTCs first.

- PERFORM ACTIVE TEST USING TECHSTREAM (OPERATE OCV)
- Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
- Start the engine.
- Turn the Techstream ON.
- Warm up the engine.
- Select the following menu items: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Active Test / Control the VVT System (Bank 1).
- Check the engine speed while operating the Camshaft Timing Oil Control Valve (OCV) using the Techstream.
OK
Tester Operation Specified Condition OCV OFF Normal engine speed OCV ON Engine idles roughly or stalls
(soon after OCV switched from OFF to ON)

OK: Go to next step
- CHECK WHETHER DTC OUTPUT RECURS (DTC P0011 OR P0012)
- Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
- Turn the ignition switch to ON.
- Turn the Techstream ON.
- Clear DTCs . Refer to DTC CHECK / CLEAR .
- Start the engine and warm it up.
- Refer to the confirmation driving pattern for P0011, and P0012.
- Select the following menu items: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Trouble Code / Pending.
- Read Pending DTCs.RESULT

A → CHECK FOR INTERMITTENT PROBLEMS
- CHECK VALVE TIMING (CHECK FOR LOOSE AND JUMPED TEETH ON TIMING CHAIN)
- Remove the cylinder head cover . Refer to ADJUSTMENT .
- Turn the crankshaft pulley, and align its groove with the alignment mark "0" of the timing chain cover.
- Check that the alignment marks of the camshaft timing gears are aligned with the alignment marks of the bearing cap as shown in the illustration.
If not, turn the crankshaft 1 revolution (360°), then align the marks as above.

- Reinstall the cylinder head cover . Refer to ADJUSTMENT .
NG → ADJUST VALVE TIMING
OK: Go to next step
- INSPECT CAMSHAFT TIMING OIL CONTROL VALVE ASSEMBLY
- Remove the camshaft timing oil control valve assembly . Refer to REMOVAL .
- Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.
Standard resistance
Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition 1 - 2 20°C (68°F) 6.9 to 7.9 Ω - Apply the positive battery voltage to terminal 1 and negative battery voltage to terminal 2. Check the valve operation.
OK
Valve moves quickly.
- Reinstall the camshaft timing oil control valve assembly . Refer to INSTALLATION .

OK: Go to next step
- INSPECT OIL CONTROL VALVE FILTER
- Remove the oil control valve filter . Refer to DISASSEMBLY - Step 40

Filter is not clogged.
- Remove the oil control valve filter . Refer to REASSEMBLY - Step 7 .
NG → CLEAN OIL CONTROL VALVE FILTER
OK: Go to next step
- Remove the oil control valve filter . Refer to DISASSEMBLY - Step 40

- REPLACE CAMSHAFT TIMING GEAR ASSEMBLY
- Replace the camshaft timing gear assembly . Refer to REMOVAL .
NEXT: Go to next step
- GO TO DTC CHART. Refer to DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE CHART
- REPLACE CAMSHAFT TIMING OIL CONTROL VALVE ASSEMBLY. Refer to REMOVAL
- CHECK WHETHER DTC OUTPUT RECURS
- Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
- Turn the ignition switch to ON.
- Turn the Techstream ON.
- Clear DTCs . Refer to DTC CHECK / CLEAR .
- Start the engine and warm it up.
- Refer to the confirmation driving pattern for P0011, and P0012.
- Select the following menu items: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Trouble Code / Pending.

DTC P0011 or P0012 is output when foreign objects in engine oil are caught in some parts of the system. These codes will stay output for a short time even after the system returns to normal. These foreign objects are then captured by the oil filter, thus eliminating the source of the problem.
