Inspection Procedure

HINT:

Read freeze frame data using the Techstream. Freeze frame data records the engine condition when malfunctions are detected. When troubleshooting, freeze frame data can help determine if the vehicle was moving or stationary, if the engine was warmed up or not, if the air-fuel ratio was lean or rich, and other data from the time the malfunction occurred.

  1. INSPECT IGNITION COIL ASSEMBLY (POWER SOURCE) 
    1. Disconnect the ignition coil connectors.
    2. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Standard resistance (Check for open) 

      RESISTANCE SPECIFICATION - CHECK FOR OPEN

      Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
      B25-4 (GND) - Body ground Always Below 1 Ω
      B26-4 (GND) - Body ground Always Below 1 Ω
      B27-4 (GND) - Body ground Always Below 1 Ω
      B28-4 (GND) - Body ground Always Below 1 Ω
    3. Turn the ignition switch to ON.

    4. Measure the voltage according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Standard voltage 

      VOLTAGE SPECIFICATION

      Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
      B25-1 (+B) - B25-4 (GND) Ignition switch ON 11 to 14 V
      B26-1 (+B) - B26-4 (GND) Ignition switch ON 11 to 14 V
      B27-1 (+B) - B27-4 (GND) Ignition switch ON 11 to 14 V
      B28-1 (+B) - B28-4 (GND) Ignition switch ON 11 to 14 V
    5. Reconnect the ignition coil connectors.

    NG:  Go to step  4

    OK: Go to next step 

  2. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (IGNITION COIL - ECM) 
    1. Disconnect the ignition coil connectors.
    2. Disconnect the ECM connector.
    3. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Standard resistance (Check for open) 

      RESISTANCE SPECIFICATION - CHECK FOR OPEN

      Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
      B25-2 (IGF) - B33-81 (IGF1) Always Below 1 Ω
      B26-2 (IGF) - B33-81 (IGF1) Always Below 1 Ω
      B27-2 (IGF) - B33-81 (IGF1) Always Below 1 Ω
      B28-2 (IGF) - B33-81 (IGF1) Always Below 1 Ω

      Standard resistance (Check for open) 

      RESISTANCE SPECIFICATION - CHECK FOR OPEN

      Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
      B25-3 (IGT1) - B33-85 (IGT1) Always Below 1 Ω
      B26-3 (IGT2) - B33-84 (IGT2) Always Below 1 Ω
      B27-3 (IGT3) - B33-83 (IGT3) Always Below 1 Ω
      B28-3 (IGT4) - B33-82 (IGT4) Always Below 1 Ω

      Standard resistance (Check for short) 

      RESISTANCE SPECIFICATION - CHECK FOR SHORT

      Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
      B25-2 (IGF) or B33-81 (IGF1) - Body ground Always 10 kΩ or higher
      B26-2 (IGF) or B33-81 (IGF1) - Body ground Always 10 kΩ or higher
      B27-2 (IGF) or B33-81 (IGF1) - Body ground Always 10 kΩ or higher
      B28-2 (IGF) or B33-81 (IGF1) - Body ground Always 10 kΩ or higher

      Standard resistance (Check for short) 

      RESISTANCE SPECIFICATION - CHECK FOR SHORT

      Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
      B25-3 (IGT1) or B33-85 (IGT1) - Body ground Always 10 kΩ or higher
      B26-3 (IGT2) or B33-84 (IGT2) - Body ground Always 10 kΩ or higher
      B27-3 (IGT3) or B33-83 (IGT3) - Body ground Always 10 kΩ or higher
      B28-3 (IGT4) or B33-82 (IGT4) - Body ground Always 10 kΩ or higher
    4. Reconnect the ECM connector.
    5. Reconnect the ignition coil connectors.

    NG : REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR 

    OK: Go to next step 

  3. CHECK WHETHER DTC OUTPUT RECURS (DTC P0351, P0352, P0353 OR P0354) 
    1. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
    2. Turn the ignition switch to ON.
    3. Turn the Techstream ON.
    4. Clear DTCs (See DTC CHECK/CLEAR ).
    5. Shuffle arrangement of the ignition coils with igniters (among No. 1 to No. 4 cylinders).
      NOTE: Do not shuffle the connectors.
    6. Perform a simulation test.
    7. Select the following menu items: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Trouble Codes.
    8. Read DTCs.

      Result 

      RESULT REFERENCE

      Result Proceed To
      Same DTC output A
      Different ignition coil DTC output B

    B : REPLACE IGNITION COIL  (See REMOVAL )

    A : REPLACE ECM  (See REMOVAL )

  4. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (IGNITION COIL - INTEGRATION RELAY) 
    1. Disconnect the ignition coil connectors.
    2. Remove the integration relay (IG2 relay) from the engine room relay block (See REMOVAL ).
    3. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Standard resistance (Check for open) 

      RESISTANCE SPECIFICATION - CHECK FOR OPEN

      Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
      B25-1 (+B) - 1A-4 Always Below 1 Ω.
      B26-1 (+B) - 1A-4 Always Below 1 Ω
      B27-1 (+B) - 1A-4 Always Below 1 Ω
      B28-1 (+B) - 1A-4 Always Below 1 Ω

      Standard resistance (Check for short) 

      RESISTANCE SPECIFICATION - CHECK FOR SHORT

      Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
      B25-1 (+B) or 1A-4-Body ground Always 10 kΩ or higher
      B26-1 (+B) or 1A-4-Body ground Always 10 kΩ or higher
      B27-1 (+B) or 1A-4 - Body ground Always 10 kΩ or higher
      B28-1 (+B) or 1A-4 - Body ground Always 10 kΩ or higher
    4. Reinstall the integration relay.
    5. Reconnect the ignition coil connectors.

    NG : REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR 

    OK : REPAIR OR REPLACE ECM POWER SOURCE CIRCUIT  (See ECM POWER SOURCE CIRCUIT )
