On-Vehicle Inspection

  1. INSPECT SPEEDOMETER 
    1. Check the operation.
      1. Using a speedometer tester, inspect the speedometer and confirm that the speedometer readings are within the acceptable range. Also check the odometer operation.

        Reference: MPH

        20 mph 20 to 23 0 mph
        40 mph 40 to 43.5 mph
        60 mph 60 to 64 0 mph
        80 mph 80 to 84 5 mph
        100 mph 100 to 105 0 mph
        120 mph 120 to 125 5 mph
        140 mph 140 to 146 0 mph
        CAUTION: Do not use worn, underinflated or overinflated tires, as the speedometer reading will be inaccurate.
      2. Check the deflection width of the speedometer indicator.

        Reference: 

        Below 0.3 mph (0.5 km/h) 

  2. INSPECT OUTPUT SIGNAL OF VEHICLE SPEED SENSOR 
    1. Check the output signal waveform.
      1. Remove the combination meter, but do not disconnect the connector.
      2. Start the engine.
      3. Check the signal waveform according to the condition(s) in the table below

        OK: 

        Waveform is as shown in  Fig 1 . 

        HINT:

        As the vehicle speed increases, the cycle of the signal waveform narrows.

  3. INSPECT TACHOMETER 
    1. Check the operation.
      1. Connect Techstream to the DLC3.
      2. Start the engine.
      3. Operate the Techstream according to the display and select "DATA LIST" (See DATA LIST / ACTIVE TEST  )

      4. Compare the engine speed displayed on the tester with the tachometer reading.

  4. INSPECT FUEL RECEIVER GAUGE 
    1. Disconnect the fuel sender gauge connector
    2. Turn the ignition switch on (IG), then check the position of the receiver gauge needle.

      OK: 

      Needle position is on EMPTY. 

    3. Connect terminals 2 and 3 on the wire harness side connector of the fuel sender gauge.
    4. Turn the ignition switch on (IG), then check the position of the receiver gauge needle.

      OK: 

      Needle position is on FULL.

  5. INSPECT FUEL LEVEL WARNING LIGHT 
    1. Disconnect the fuel sender gauge connector.
    2. Turn the ignition switch on (IG), check that the fuel level needle indicates EMPTY and fuel level warning light comes on.

      OK: 

      Fuel level warning light comes on. 

  6. INSPECT BRAKE WARNING LIGHT 
    1. Inspect the parking brake warning light.
      1. Disconnect the parking brake switch connector.
      2. Turn the ignition switch on (IG).
      3. Ground the terminal of the wire harness side connector, then check the parking brake warning light.

        OK: 

        Brake warning light illuminates. 

      4. Reconnect the parking brake switch connector.
    2. Inspect the brake fluid level warning light.
      1. Disconnect the brake fluid level warning switch connector.
      2. Turn the ignition switch on (IG).
      3. Connect a terminal to the other terminal of the wire harness side connector, then check the brake fluid level warning light.

        OK: 

        Brake warning light illuminates. 

      4. Reconnect the brake fluid level warning switch connector.
  7. INSPECT BRAKE FLUID LEVEL WARNING SWITCH 
    1. Turn the ignition switch off.
    2. Remove the reservoir filler cap and strainer.
    3. Disconnect the brake fluid level warning switch connector.
    4. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

      HINT:

      A float is located inside the reservoir. Its position can be changed by increasing or decreasing the level of brake fluid.

      HINT:

      If there is no problem after finishing the above check, adjust the brake fluid level to the MAX level.

  8. INSPECT OIL PRESSURE WARNING LIGHT 
    1. Disconnect the engine oil pressure switch connector.
    2. Turn the ignition switch on (IG).
    3. Ground the terminal of the wire harness side connector, then check the engine oil pressure warning light.

      OK: 

      Engine oil pressure warning light illuminates. 

  9. OIL MAINTENANCE INDICATOR RESETTING PROCEDURE 
    OIL MAINTENANCE INDICATOR RESETTING PROCEDURE

    Blinks Vehicle has run 4,500 miles since previous setting Indicator blinks for 15 seconds after ignition switch is turned ON (including 3 seconds for valve check)
    Illuminates Vehicle has run 5,000 miles since previous setting Indicator illuminates after ignition switch is turned ON
    1. Set the window display located inside the combination meter to the Trip A indication.
    2. Turn the ignition switch off.
    3. While pressing the ODO/TRIP display change switch (reset switch) (for at least 5 seconds), turn the ignition switch on (IG).
    4. When the reset procedure has been completed successfully, the MAINT REQD indicator light turns off and the ODO/TRIP meter indicates 0 (zero) and then returns to its regular display.

      HINT:

      If the reset fails, the MAINT REQD indicator light remains illuminated. Perform the procedure again.
