Inspection Procedure

HINT:

When using the intelligent tester, start from *1. When not using the intelligent tester, start from *2.

  1. READ VALUE OF INTELLIGENT TESTER (COOLANT TEMPERATURE)*1
    1. Check the DATA LIST for proper functioning of the engine coolant temperature sensor.

      ECM:

      ECM REFERENCE

Item Measurement Item / Display (Range) Normal Condition Diagnostic Note
COOLANT TEMP Engine coolant Temperature (ECT):
      Min.: -40°C (-40°F), Max.: -140°C (-284°F)
      75 to 100°C (167 to 203°F):
      After warming up engine
      • If value -40°C (-40°F): ECT sensor open
      • If value 140°C (284°F) or higher:

NG : GO TO  SFI SYSTEM

OK : GO TO NEXT STEP

  2. CHECK COMBINATION METER ASSEMBLY (INDICATOR CHECK)*2
    1. Disconnect the E2 connector from the engine coolant temperature sensor.
    2. Check the meter indicator conditions according to the table below.

OK : GO TO NEXT STEP

1 - 2 Short circuit (Ignition switch ON) Warning light blinks (red)
All wires are disconnected Open circuit (Ignition switch ON) Warning light turns on (blue)

OK : REPLACE ENGINE COOLANT TEMPERATURE SENSOR

NG : GO TO NEXT STEP

  3. CHECK WIRE HARNESS (COMBINATION METER - ECM)
    1. Disconnect the C11 meter connector.
    2. Disconnect the E5 ECM connector.
    3. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Standard resistance

NG : REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS AND CONNECTOR

OK : GO TO NEXT STEP

  4. CHECK OPERATION OF COMBINATION METER SYSTEM WITH A NEW OR NORMALLY FUNCTIONING COMBINATION METER
    1. Temporarily replace the combination meter with a new or normally functioning combination meter.
    2. Check that the malfunction disappears.

      OK: Malfunction disappears.

NG : GO TO  SFI SYSTEM

OK : REPLACE COMBINATION METER ASSEMBLY
