Removal Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different variant/trim than selected.
  1. Remove the battery tray. Refer to Battery Tray Replacement (L61) or Battery Tray Replacement (L66) in Engine Electrical.
  2. Disconnect the air duct hose from the intake plenum. Refer to Air Cleaner Intake Duct Replacement in Engine Controls 2.2 L (L61)

  3. Disconnect the shift control cable (3) from the range select lever (4).
  4. Release the shift control cable retaining clip (2) and remove the cable from the shift control cable bracket (1).
  5. Disconnect the transaxle wiring harness from the main transaxle electrical connector, and the park neutral position (PNP) switch.
  6. Install the engine support fixture. Refer to Engine Support Fixture in Engine Mechanical 2.2 L (L61).
  7. Tie the radiator, air conditioning condenser, and fan module assembly to the upper radiator support to keep the assembly with the vehicle when the frame is lowered.

  8. Remove the upper transmission to engine bolts (1, 3, 5, 6) and stud (2).
  9. Remove the left transmission mount. Refer to Transmission Mount Replacement - Left .
  10. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  11. Remove the front wheel and tire assemblies. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
  12. Remove the splash shield. Refer to Splash Shield Replacement - Engine in Body Front End.

  13. Remove the bolts (2, 3) from the transmission brace.
  14. Remove the transmission brace (1).
  15. Remove the starter. Refer to Starter Motor Replacement (L61) or Starter Motor Replacement (L66) in Engine Electrical.
  16. Mark the relationship of the flywheel to the torque converter for reassembly.
  17. Use the J 43653  to prevent the crankshaft from rotating.

  18. Remove the torque converter to flywheel bolts.
  19. Remove the nut holding the transmission cooler line retainer to the transmission.
  20. Disconnect the transmission cooler lines from the transmission.

  21. Disconnect the VSS wiring harness from the sensor.
  22. Remove the steering gear intermediate shaft pinch bolt. Refer to Intermediate Steering Shaft Replacement in Steering wheel and Column.
  23. Disconnect the tie rods from the steering knuckle. Refer to Rack and Pinion Outer Tie Rod End Replacement in Power Steering System.
  24. Disconnect the stabilizer shaft links from the stabilizer shaft. Refer to Stabilizer Shaft Link Replacement in Suspension-Front Suspension.
  25. Disconnect the ball joints from the steering knuckles. Refer to Lower Ball Joint Replacement in Suspension-Front Suspension.
  26. Remove the frame. Refer to Frame Replacement (L61) or Frame Replacement (L66) in Frame and Underbody.
  27. Disconnect the wheel drive shafts from the transaxle. Refer to Wheel Drive Shaft Replacement - Front in Wheel Drive Shafts
  28. Support the transmission with a suitable jack.

  29. Remove the lower transmission to engine bolts (5, 6, 7, 8).
  30. Separate the engine and the transaxle.
  31. Remove the transaxle from the vehicle.
  32. Flush the transmission cooler and the lines with J 35944-A  . See Special Tools . Refer to Automatic Transmission Oil Cooler Flushing and Flow Test (J 45096) or Automatic Transmission Oil Cooler Flushing and Flow Test (SA9165T) .

  33. Remove the following only if replacing the transmission.
